President Donald Trump is unveiling Monday plans for a massive steel plant in Iowa that the White House says will be the largest in American history and promises to bring 1,750 permanent jobs to the state.
The roughly $15 billion steel plant is touted as a major new investment and evidence that Trump's economic agenda is bringing heavy manufacturing back to the U.S. with just over a month until the midterms. It will create between 5,000 and 6,000 construction jobs during its first phase.
Trump is expected to make the announcement from the Oval Office at 2 p.m. alongside executives from Mesabi Metallics, a White House official told Fox News Digital. The company plans to build the facility using iron ore from its newly constructed mine in Minnesota.
The Iowa plant is expected to produce 7.5 million tons of steel annually in its first phase before eventually reaching 10 million tons per year, according to the White House. The administration says that would make it the largest steel plant ever built in the U.S.
If completed as planned, the project would represent a significant expansion of American steel-making capacity. At its planned 10 million tons of annual production, the Iowa plant alone would have output equivalent to roughly one-tenth of what the entire U.S. steel industry produced last year.
The project would also create a fully domestic supply chain, according to the White House, using iron ore mined at Mesabi's Minnesota operation to produce finished steel in Iowa.

Alberta oil can still be bought and sold, like usual, regardless of Venezuela. But now the US only needs the raw materials one this plant is built.

Citing tariffs and also a big drop of shipments to Canadian buyers.

They’ll put the ore on trains (like they already do) and instead of going to Duluth or Two Harbors for loading on boats, the trains can go straight to Iowa ...
And they’ll worry a lot less about the weather.
My understanding of the system is that the US refineries buy Alberta’s oil at a discount and then export what is not used. It costs Alberta a bit.
The US, in effect, is a pass through system for Alberta oil.
That is a very good observation, shipping on ore boats (bulk carriers are called boats on the Great Lakes) that can carry 40,000 tons of iron ore pellets is a lot cheaper then carrying them on trains. Also what about the other raw materials to make steel? How are they going to get to Iowa.

your article indicates that USA tariff costs nuked both USA demand for Hamilton steel as well as USA demand for Canadian products manufactured from Hamilton steel, a double whammy ...
i expect we’ll be seeing quite a few more of these announcements of Canadian manufacturing folding up as USA markets are lost ...
and of course, there is no way on earth that china is gonna want to import EXPENSIVE Canadian products, particularly products made from chinese steel and aluminum imported by Canada for the purpose of re-export to the USA ...

I don’t know about the proposed Iowa plant, but many modern steel mills use scrap steel (rather than iron ore) as the primary feedstock. Guessing that scrap would likely be purchased from multiple sources and arrive by rail. FWIW, YMMV, etc., etc...
