If your blond preteen seems to be turning into a brunette, you're not imagining things. For some children, hair that starts out platinum blond gradually becomes darker and may end up dark brown, or even black, as they grow.
The short answer is that hair color is controlled by a complex interplay of genes, pigment-producing cells and, later in childhood, hormones. Scientists understand many of the genes involved in hair color, but they are still trying to find out why some blond children's hair darkens while others' locks remain blond for life.
"It depends on their genetic inheritance," Desmond Tobin, a professor of dermatological science at University College Dublin, told Live Science in an email.
Hair gets its color from a pigment called melanin, which is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes in hair follicles. There are two main types of melanin: eumelanin, which produces brown and black shades, and pheomelanin, which contributes yellow and red tones to hair. The amount and type of melanin produced by follicles largely determine the color of hair that grows from it.
In general, more eumelanin means darker hair. For example, during pregnancy, high levels of estrogen and progesterone can encourage hair darkening as more eumelanin is produced.

My hair started blond then went brown. My beard was red hair. In my case I think it is the result of a blending of the two traits.
Rust.
As a young boy mine was brown. Eventually turned dark black in my 30s and totally gray by 50.
Now it’s white.
My hair was blond when I was about 5 years old then over time went mouse brown. Then one day in college it suddenly turned light ash blond and still is today. π
In the late 1960’s, I asked my father why he never yelled at me to get a haircut. All my friends at school were constantly complaining that their father was always on their case to get a haircut. My father never said a word to me about it.
He laughed and explained that in the 1920’s. he wore his long blonde hair in a pony tail. He was born in 1910, and that was the style when he was a teenager. He explained that my friend’s fathers grew up in the 1950’s with flat tops and crew cuts. They weren’t used to long hair.
Prior to that comment from my father, I never knew he had blond hair as it was always pure white ever since I was very young.
My mother used say that my hair was like spun gold. It darkened at about 16. My grandmother was blonde as as a child, but her hair darkened so much that my aunt asked me. Why my grandmother dyed her hair so dark. She never dyed it at all.

Mines gotten lighter...white.
Y friend’s daughter went from golden blonde to strawberry blonde and now auburn. She’s very beautiful and starting dating and he keeps a shotgun handy.
My brother said that’s the best outcome. Either it gets darker, or it falls out!
Dittos.
I suspect they got over in that regard. This would have been in the 1950s.
When Mr FF and I met, we were teenagers. He was blonde, and remained blonde until a few years after our kids were born. Then as we got older, his hair darkened. I always think of him as blonde, but nobody else does. I do acknowledge that he has brown hair now. Heβs still my sweet blondie though.
It is very common for many children to start off with blonde hair who are not going to be natural blondes as adults. I always wondered why that was and what the evolutionary reason was for it. I still wonder why it is an evolutionary trait. Do parents treat blonde children better with more care? I don’t know.
I had blonde hair as a kid and then two tone blonde then later as I got older, a bit of salt n pepper then some grey. What I have noticed if I get some sun my hair becomes blonder and the grey is reduced and also if I change shampoos between the two I use with one used only occasionally.
Hair today... Gone tomorrow and when it’s gone the colour doesn’t matter much.

God created a few perfect heads. The rest he had to cover with hair.
