This El Niño will have an epic tantrum.
While still months away from reaching its peak, the super El Niño is already shattering temperature records.
Data show that the sea surface temperature in the tropical Pacific has reached 3.07°C (around 5.5 F) — tying the record set by the 2015–16 El Niño — with scientists expecting it to get a lot hotter.
“This month (September) is very likely to have the highest monthly anomalies on record,” Zeke Hausfather, co-author of comprehensive climate change reports for the United Nations, told Phys.org in an email.
Based on an analysis of 14 different climate models, Hausfather determined that temps could hit a peak of 4.0C (a 7.2F rise) in November and December, making this El Niño the largest in 1,000 years.
For reference, any temperature increase above 0.5 C (0.9 F) is considered a regular El Niño while anything over 2 C (3.7 F) is deemed a super El Niño.
Hasufather’s figures, detailed in an analysis in Carbon Brief, draw on how much daily sea surface temps in the Niño 3.4 region—an imaginary region in the Pacific— exceed the 30-year average.
However, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has increasingly adopted a new method, dubbed ONI (Nino3.4), which compares the region’s rate of warming to the entire tropical belt.

Any storm, and the first thing we’ll hear is “It’s EL NINO!!!!! Run for your life!!!! We’re all gonna die!!!!!!”
The most concerning potential effect of an El Nino is very large scale changes in weather patterns affecting crops. Could be beneficial in some areas and lead to drought in others. The problem for farmers is that they have to make planting decisions long ahead of any certainty about what they’ll be facing.

The doomsayers are extremely frustrated there are ZERO hurricanes hitting United States this year so far, and the peak hurricane season has already passed. Democrats are praying for another Katrina just before midterms.

Hurricane Helene (September 2024) caused catastrophic damage to Asheville, NC, resulting in an estimated $60 billion in losses for North Carolina and at least 108 deaths statewide (with 43 in Buncombe County). The storm unleashed historic rainfall that caused the French Broad and Swannanoa rivers to burst their banks, wiping out the River Arts District and Biltmore Village, destroying 2,300 structures, and triggering over 300 landslides that severed major roadways like I-26 and I-40.

After studying this phenomenon for many decades, I believe it is true—that is, the periodic El Ninos are a real thing that affects our weather. Are they manmade? Of course not! Are they influenced by human produced carbon dioxide? No.
Nobody really looks at all the statistics. We are only one big volcanic eruption from the Earth itself belching out enough carbon dioxide (and other chemicals) into the atmosphere to surpass the last 25 years of human industry. Three or four simultaneous major eruptions could rival ALL human activity ever.
But El Nino is real. It happens. Not much we can do about it but study it’s relationship to our weather.
Here in Alabama (and the rest of the Southeast) we are having a terribly hot Summer. High 90s, low 100s every day. Usually by this time of the year a hurricane or two or three has barreled into the Southeast and torn up the high pressure that lords over us. That hasn’t happened. This hot, dry air has been more or less in place for more than 3 months.
We could manage our reservoirs better, for both times of flood and drought. If we can get better at predicting when it will happen, we can advise farmers on the ideal crops to plant, herds to graze or move, etc.
