NYT blasted for baffling Oct. 7 terror attack take, stating ‘Israelis still largely view themselves as the victims’

The New York Times came under fire Wednesday over a baffling passage that appeared in an article about an Israeli documentary — which said the Jewish state “still largely view themselves as the victims of Oct. 7.”

The Sept. 14 article, penned by Jerusalem-based reporter Isabel Kershner, covers the controversy over the documentary film “NAZA,” which chronicles the killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza and just won the Special Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

The article details the criticism about the 80-minute film lodged by some Israeli officials — who called it “based on blood libels” and “deliberate distortions of reality” — and even floated the idea of stripping its directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor of their Israeli citizenship for “betraying the state of Israel.”

Then it points to the upcoming three-year anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023 terror attacks and Israel’s national election, a pair of weighty, potentially fraught events which Kershner posits have “further fueled the backlash” against the film.

“Israelis are deeply divided over how to apportion blame for the policy, military and intelligence failures that preceded the attack and the war,” she writes.

“But Israelis still largely view themselves as the victims of Oct. 7,” she continued, even citing the 1,200 civilian casualties slaughtered that day and the 250 taken hostage in what she called “the deadliest day in Israel’s history” in the very same paragraph.

The phrasing, and confusing juxtaposition, quickly sparked bitter outrage on social media.

“No words for this abomination,” CNN correspondent Scott Jennings wrote in a post on X sharing a screenshot with the offending passage highlighted, which has already garnered hundreds of angry responses and hundreds of thousands of views.

Well, we know how Uncle Walter sang Stalin's praises when millions in the USSR died of famine. This sort of thing on the NYT's is not terribly surprising.

Well, I guess 6 MILLION murdered Jews in WWII would tend to make them feel that way. October 7th didn’t help much either!

They supposedly gave this naza thing a 25-minute standing ovation at the Venice festival. 25 minutes is actually longer than the ones Stalin used to get after speaking. I think the one described in gulag archipelago was like 15 minutes. They eventually had to rig lights and bells to signal when it was safe to stop applauding. That was fear of the gulag, these people don’t have that excuse.

Earlier threads on FR had witness reports after Oct. 7. On FR at that time:

...the abductees undergo psychological and physical torture and abuse. They are locked in tunnels and small spaces, threatened with weapons and beaten. The detail of the document states that children are forced to watch footage of massacre and mutilation, all the abductees suffered pain and humiliation. A meal a day. Lack of medical attention.
... Others described being able to obtain a limited amount of sandy and salty water...

Then the New York Times writes the captive Israelis largely consider themselves victims.

Now where in the world did the Israelis get that idea?

New York newspapers have had a strange, symbiotic relationship with leftism at least since the European revolutionary movements of 1848. Marx (or Engels ghostwriting for him) wrote for the New York Daily Tribune over nearly a decade prior to the Civil War, and the NYT seemed to embrace his ravings almost as far back.

Hatred of Israel by nominal Jews in Gotham City has been sort of de rigueur for so long that I am no longer astonished by it.

Sounds like it should have won the Slay the Jewry prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
