President Trump pledged a $5,000 payout to U.S. adults on Wednesday, but only if Republicans hold onto their majority in Congress come November.
“Here is my promise: if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” he said at the GOP’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas.
The legality of this disbursal is unclear. There are about 270 million adults in the U.S.
Trump told attendees Wednesday that the administration can disburse the proposed “Trump dividends” “because we’ve done so well and because our country is making so much money.”
He added that the payments could only be used in the U.S. but did not outline any specifics.
“We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money,” he said. “We don’t want you going to China, to Germany.”
Trump had teased the announcement earlier in his marathon speech at the Dallas arena, saying he thought it would be “the best part of the speech.”
The president has floated ideas like this before. Last year, he promised to distribute $2,000 tariff dividend checks to Americans but was vague about specifics.
It was unclear whether Congress would have to approve such a move. Trump said he didn’t “believe” he needed congressional approval for the tariff checks, but National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett later suggested Congress would have to be involved.
He can’t drop it now. Do you really think the media is going to let him drop it?
If you do, I got a bridge to sell ya!
Only “International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA)” based tariffs were ruled against by SCOTUS...plenty of other customs tariffs are in effect:

Yeah, but they can’t say it is vote buying because he has not delivered on the promise. He is just talking.
How many will believe he will actually deliver based on his past promised of checks in the mail?
Well, Congress will just say no and manage to take it for themselves. As they do quite often.
Wrong, not all the tariffs are illegal.
So we can afford it
I’ve lost track of these ‘promises’.
Take it up with President Trump.
We’re forty trillion in debt. Where is this dividend coming from?
Yeah, I belive he was just talking, but was hoping as I need some extra pecunia badly.w
Same place the current budget deficit of $1.8 trillion is coming from.
They can increase the amount for them to get elected, and then use it as a huge first step towards their ultimate goal of a Universal Basic Income for everyone.
When I read it the other day I just sat at my computer shaking my head. Gas in Arizona is $4.50. Can’t even imagine it is in California. The economy is a bit better there is so much building and growth but so many people I talk to do not know.
Yes I am aware of that. But considering the national debt size, I rather not get $2000 tariff check. Better if that $2000 is used to reduce yearly deficits.
Record high national GDP? 65 BILLION barrels of oil deal with Venezuela? Trillions of foreign investment coming into USA to build things here?
Knowing what the government has given non citizens for years I vote for 5k.
Trump is just kicking the hive.
You could just give it back if you felt that bad about it.
Pat Buchanan was the right man in 1992.
Ron Paul was the right man in 2008.
Right now, I'd settle for Vance.
I’m a republican I voted for Bush and Romney and McCain.
Only two Presidents I voted for enthusiastically was Reagan and Trump.
They both had disappointing moments.
This is why I have the tag i do.
None of that is government income. It’s all measures of the volume of buyer and seller activity. It’s nice and great to have but only the taxes on some of that activity is income for the government to distribute.
And theres still that forty trillion….
