Trump pledges $5K ‘Trump dividend’ if Republicans hold onto Congress
The Hill ^ | September 9, 2026 | Mallory Wilson

President Trump pledged a $5,000 payout to U.S. adults on Wednesday, but only if Republicans hold onto their majority in Congress come November.

“Here is my promise: if the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” he said at the GOP’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas.

The legality of this disbursal is unclear. There are about 270 million adults in the U.S.

Trump told attendees Wednesday that the administration can disburse the proposed “Trump dividends” “because we’ve done so well and because our country is making so much money.”

He added that the payments could only be used in the U.S. but did not outline any specifics.

“We don’t want you going to Canada to spend the money,” he said. “We don’t want you going to China, to Germany.”

Trump had teased the announcement earlier in his marathon speech at the Dallas arena, saying he thought it would be “the best part of the speech.”

The president has floated ideas like this before. Last year, he promised to distribute $2,000 tariff dividend checks to Americans but was vague about specifics.

It was unclear whether Congress would have to approve such a move. Trump said he didn’t “believe” he needed congressional approval for the tariff checks, but National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett later suggested Congress would have to be involved.

That's a $1,350,000,000 expenditure.

The 30 year Treasury hit 5.3% today despite Secretary Bessent, who has spent $6 billion in buying back long-dated bonds and who has been threatening bond shorts.

Where do you think the 30 year would trade if this election-year giveaway were to actually take place?

At some point he should just stop this nonsense. Does anyone who is still waiting on their $2,000 tariff check still pay attention to him?

Promising money for votes ? He’s learning from the Dems. Maybe learning a wrong lesson but still learning.

Despite this ignoble gesture Trump will still be 1000x better for America than a DemoNaziCommie puppet in the White House.

$1.35 trillion is a small price to pay to keep our budget slashing Republican Majority.

We haven’t seen a penny of the tariff refund. Or a penny for any of the promised. Covid cheques — there were several promised cheques or direct deposits and we never got a penny

Answer: politicians used to buy votes with their own money. Thrn they started buying votes with their campaign contributions. Then they started buying votes with our tax money. Now it seems they’re reducing governmental spend dung by only promising to pay for our votes.

Cutting expenditures — a good thing, eh?

Pretty free with money we don’t have isn’t he?

More of his BS. Not what I voted for.

Full of crap but just can’t keep his mouth shut. Guess it has to come out somewhere.

We’re borrowing $1.5 trillion a year and all the money is going to someone else.

At least my wife and I get $10k.

like living in the last days of the Roman Republic.

Isn’t that how Dems win elections?

The wisdom of this idea aside, Trump has to get it through Congress.

Congress might agree, if they can add pork of their own.
And if they don’t agree, Trump looks like a bag of hot air.

No real plus side here. I hope he quietly drops the whole thing.

In order for this to work, the president must sign an Executive Order that prohibits inflation that would otherwise be caused by the Fed printing $1.35 trillion.

Thanks Mr. President, but I’d rather have you get the IRS to quickly correct the mistakes they’ve made in calculating people’s taxes, especially after they’ve wrongly reduced a person’s tax refund, and when the error is pointed out to them in an electronically sent tax amended form, that after 18 weeks, that person’s amended return hasn’t yet been processed. I think the IRS is hoping I’ll croak before they send me what’s due me.

Did Trump actually say "to every adult in America"?

That statement would include non-citizens.

He was either being sloppy in his speech, or the media misquoted him.

Trust the Plan.
Drain the Swamp.
Lock her Up.
Build the Wall.
All Bullsqueeze.
Just like this clearly unlawful and delusional idea.
But hey, the bloodbath at the midterms is going to be inevitable. So back to sh@tposting on Troof Socials. Obviously that’s what he’d rather do than his job.

Trump needs to cut back on the jokes and trolling.

There's a time and place, but Trump does it way too often.

Rather than occasionally targeting the Left at key moments, he's irritating too many independent and moderate voters.
