Explanation: Nā ʻUhane Māhoe Huki Pū i ke Ola, is the Hawaiian name given to this image of a pair of spiral galaxies locked in a mutual gravitational embrace. Some 200 million light-years distant toward the high flying constellation Pegasus their spectacular, galactic scale merger is captured in sharp detail in the image from the 8.1 meter Gemini North telescope on Maunakea, Hawai‘i. The galaxy pair, known as NGC 7253 and Arp 278, was chosen as a target, researched, and given a Hawaiian name by high school students in the joint Gemini Observatory and University of Hawaiʻi Project Hōkūlani internship program. The name translates to "The Twin Spirits Pulling Together Creating Life". That's both culturally and astronomically appropriate for galaxy collisions that trigger a cosmic maelstrom of star formation from galactic reservoirs of elemental building blocks of life. These merging galaxies are found within a region of Pegasus identified as the Hawaiian navigational constellation Ka Lupe o Kawelo.

How about a nifty Nickname, for us main-landers who struggle with the Hawaiian dialects?
I nominate the term “Double-Hula”.

I’m in favor of giving celestial objects names which are easy to pronounce. It looks like the galaxy on the left in the photo has t-boned the other galaxy.

No, “Rellic” is not on the ping list of several hundred for the APOD ping list. If Rellic wants to be added they can send me a FRmail and I will add for free.

You guys do realize, space is how we’ll “bite the big one.”

While our politicians and activists ask for our subjugation, all to save the planet, counting carbon output, mandating new refrigerants every other year it seems, telling us to sweat in the summer and freeze in the winter, all in the name of “saving the planet.”

It’ll be some friggin rock from space, LIKE HAS HAPPENED BEFORE, that flips the off switch on all of the human race.

The movie “Don’t look up” did a pretty good job telling that story, I thought. Very funny movie, like Idiocracy, a satire.

In case folks missed it. There are a lot of craters on planets, ours included: https://impact.uwo.ca/impact-craters/map/

Most hit the ocean. Many are lost in time as geology and weather do their thing. What we see is the very tip of a much bigger iceberg. About 17 meteorites make it to the ground every day, 6,100 a year.

https://eyes.nasa.gov/apps/asteroids/#/home

If not a rock (what I think is the most probable), it’ll be that massive fusion reactor 8.5 light minutes from here that is constantly changing as it burns through its fuel, swells up and shrinks, sunspots or sun cycle, Gleissberg cycle... The sun is NOT some constant. It has massively fluctuated in output before. We know this with very high certainty as people froze during the Maunder Minimum: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maunder_Minimum

Just a little to high, and we all get baked, not in a good way. Just a little to low, and some alien will get a popsicle Red6 to gaze at in a million years.

Humans are vain!

We are so worried about all these self created apocalyptic scenarios, when the obvious and most likely scenario is hanging right over our head.
