Always a hit at the range, although I couldn't see lugging one across Okinawa....
Used to could buy a Thompson and Colt Monitor machine guns over the counter back in the 1930’s.
I bought my M1 from the CMP for $310, shipped to my front door via USPS ...
Try to get a Garand for $310 now ...
I have friend who got a Springfield Armory M-1A years ago and gave it to a gunsmith to accurize. I don’t understand things like MOA, but he showed me a target where the shots could be covered with a dime. He said gunsmiths don’t get certified, so you must rely on word of mouth. This guy did fantastic work.
Same here, you have no idea how many rounds have been fired through than thing. It could have need in service for more than 20 years.
Great rifle.
I carried one in Afghanistan (Kandahar, Zabul, Oruzgan) in ‘06 as a long range rifle.
Thankfully, I was mounted. That thing is bloody heavy! And the ammo? Woof!
(Gosh. It’s been 20 years already!!)

Used to be you would have to affirm you weren’t purchasing for resale. Whether that is in the next 6 months, year, who knows?
If they are modifying the receiver, I would imagine they will inspect and replace, where needed, the other parts.

I got to fire one with a selector a couple of times. I didn’t hit a thing.
M14s are murderous on full auto. And I mean murderous to the sap holding it. You’ll never hit the broad side of a barn door with one on rockandroll. Even a bipod doesn’t help. It was never going to replace the BAR. Too uncontrollable.

The CMP was founded in 1903 with the specific intent of lessening the decline of marksmanship skills within the civilian population that inevitably takes place during long periods of peacetime. So they get the inside track with the government for liquidating MilSurp weapons.
