Hormuz power play: Iran's proposed 7% shipping toll could unlock $100 billion a year

According to various reports, Iran is pushing for a transit fee of between 5% and 7% of the cargo's value, while Oman has reportedly proposed a lower 3% toll.

The Strait of Hormuz has long been one of the world's most strategically sensitive maritime chokepoints. Now, reports suggest Iran wants to transform it into one of the planet's most lucrative revenue streams by charging commercial vessels a transit fee worth up to 7% of the value of their cargo — a move that could reshape global shipping economics and intensify geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

According to a Reuters report, Iran and Oman are discussing an agreement that would give Tehran greater control over shipping traffic entering and exiting the Gulf. Under the proposal, vessels would pass through Iranian territorial waters on both inbound and outbound journeys, potentially allowing Tehran to collect transit charges.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told Iran's IRNA news agency that ships would navigate through Iranian territorial waters in both directions. He also said Tehran had received indications that the United States was prepared to return to understandings outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June.

It’s a violation of international treaties. The Straits of Hormuz are an international waterway. It is illegal to charge tolls to go through it.

The northernmost section of the UAE is only 25 miles wide.
I would guess IF they dug a canal that Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain would all help pay for it. Or the UAE could pay for it in tolls in a few years.

In the interim, all of those countries are all building pipelines to move their oil & gas directly to the Red Sea, Gulf of Oman or through Syria & Turkey to the Mediterranian.

This area (26.19823259461338, 56.39531933784942 called Two seas view). Less than a mile wide with deep water access and shoreline protection from rough seas.

Then the MoU will be signed, and the peace will settle. Then about three weeks later the Iranians will violate it and Trump will start bombing again,

Most likely, Iran will violate it on October 1, 2026 when it can do maximum damage to Republicans heading into the midterms. The way things are shaping up, Iran is going to do its best to help get a cr@p-ton of radical Democrats elected.

I don’t know anything about the geography of this area other than the ten minutes of looking at maps on the Google. There could be a granite mountain range down through it.

I would think you want to get a little farther south from Iran. So that there is absolutely no question that ships would be traveling in UAE/Oman territorial waters. Meaning they are less likely to be attacked by Iran.

Obviously, this has been considered. yet, it was never done because there was not any need for it until now. Saudi Arabia foresaw the issue and built the pipeline to the Red Sea. Qatar has wanted to build a natural gas pipeline to Europe for decades. The problem was Syria & Israel were in the way. Iraq is now rebuilding the pipeline through Syria.
Kuwait & Bahrain are basically screwed unless they join up with their neighbors on a pipeline to get their products OUT.

See Post #5. It’s interesting that Iran and the U.S. are the only major countries in the world that have NOT ratified UNCLOS.

Just for comparison sake:

AI Overview:

The Suez Canal has a water surface width of approximately 313 meters (1,027 feet) and a navigational channel width ranging between 200 and 210 meters (656 to 689 feet), depending on the specific section of the waterway.

Canal Width BreakdownSurface width: ~313 meters (1,027 ft) across the top water level.Navigational channel width: 200 to 210 meters (656 to 689 ft) measured at an 11-meter depth.

Base width: ~121 meters (397 ft) at the bottom floor.

Again, according to the Google AI:

Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC): Around 60 meters (197 feet)

Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC): 60 to 69 meters (197 to 226 feet) or wider for historic giants like the Seawise Giant

Just so we know HOW WIDE and DEEP we need to dig this ditch.

We're still a "neocon" party while Trump ran on the MAGA platform in 2024.

The most important thing he can do right now is to get the Iran war resolved even if it requires giving them concessions.

The deal is that Iran gives up nuclear bomb production and we stop attacking and blockading Iran.
