According to various reports, Iran is pushing for a transit fee of between 5% and 7% of the cargo's value, while Oman has reportedly proposed a lower 3% toll.
The Strait of Hormuz has long been one of the world's most strategically sensitive maritime chokepoints. Now, reports suggest Iran wants to transform it into one of the planet's most lucrative revenue streams by charging commercial vessels a transit fee worth up to 7% of the value of their cargo — a move that could reshape global shipping economics and intensify geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
According to a Reuters report, Iran and Oman are discussing an agreement that would give Tehran greater control over shipping traffic entering and exiting the Gulf. Under the proposal, vessels would pass through Iranian territorial waters on both inbound and outbound journeys, potentially allowing Tehran to collect transit charges.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told Iran's IRNA news agency that ships would navigate through Iranian territorial waters in both directions. He also said Tehran had received indications that the United States was prepared to return to understandings outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in June.

In this case, the Strait is so narrow that it sits in the overlapping territorial waters of Iran and Oman … and it is only considered “international waters” under the terms of the UNCLOS agreement which Iran has never ratified. (And neither has the U.S., by the way.)
I have asked before, why doesn’t Dubai/Oman go up on the peninsula where there are areas that are less than a mile wide and dig a new canal from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and bypass the Straits? No locks needed just cut some rock.
That would give an alternate transverse path through safer waters and de-nut Iran trying to control the Straits, not to mention income. It would all be in territorial water. Ships would hug the coast all the way up and back out into the Gulf of Oman.
Is Trump just going to standby and let Iran profit from these fees so as to increase their ability to buy weapons?

Then the MoU will be signed, and the peace will settle. Then about three weeks later the Iranians will violate it and Trump will start bombing again, with another 60 days for the war powers act.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and transit passage principles, international straits used for international navigation cannot charge flat tolls for passage, though coastal states may bill for specific requested navigational or environmental services. The UN took this action ending with a re-enforcement in 1994 to this day.

There are some places where it seems ludicrous NOT to collect tolls. Most of them have actual infrastructure that requires ongoing maintenance and repairs — the Panama and Suez Canals, the Bosporus Strait and Dardanelles, etc. In all of these cases, it helps that both sides of the strait or canal is in the same country.
Well they weren’t doing this until after we started bombing the shit out of them in march, soooooo.....
Aside from the majority who didn’t want this war in the first place, who could have foreseen it would make things worse!
