A new campaign will promote programs that let veterans skip the required skills test for a commercial driver's license.
The Trump administration wants soldiers to consider becoming truck drivers when they leave the military to help replace the tens of thousands of immigrant drivers who lost their licenses in a crackdown this year.
The campaign will be part of a broader interagency effort to help veterans find good civilian jobs that the White House plans to announce on Monday.
The Transportation Department began enforcing existing English language requirements for truckers last summer. Concerns about truck driver qualifications then took on more urgency after an August crash in Florida, when a truck driver performed an illegal U-turn that killed three people. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said that driver, who is from India, should never have been licensed in the first place.
Audits conducted in every state uncovered numerous non-domiciled commercial driver's licenses that remained valid long after an immigrant's work permits had expired or were issued without properly verifying their citizenship status.
Since then, about 26,000 drivers have been pulled off the road for failing to demonstrate English proficiency, and the Transportation Department said 30,000 commercial licenses were canceled because they were issued illegally. The federal government has tried to withhold millions of dollars of highway funds from California and New York for failing to comply and revoke thousands more licenses, but that has wound up in court. Several other states — including Pennsylvania, Minnesota and North Carolina — have been warned they are at risk of losing funding.

No kidding.
I have a hard enough time backing up my boat trailer, and that's nothing compared to backing up a big rig.
On the other hand, I suspect AI might be pretty good at it, and the driver could just hand it over to autopilolt when necessary.
That part there would undo the main reason most Americans want the Immigrant Truckers replaced.
ANY truck driver needs to be fully qualified before sitting behind that wheel. That should not even be a point of debate. Innocent pedestrian lives are depending on it. How long does it normally take to train a willing Truck Driver applicant? A few months? That is well worth the time and organized effort.
It’s for those who drove trucks for the military. But this waiver has been in place since the Obama admin.

I’m all for giving the jobs to vets, but skip skills tests? No.
Actually, backing a big rig is easier than backing a boat trailer. The mirrors and wheelbase make a big difference. I started driving dump trucks when I was 15. At 18 I joined the Army and hauled Artillery ammo and supplies. When I mustered out, no one recognized my experience in the military. I got a flatbed job at a small company hauling lumber out of West Virginia in the winter.

Im all for Jobs for Vets, but it does take some skill to drive a big truck safely
if a vet wants a truck driving job, help him get the training that is needed to understand the special extra rules of the road applicable to big trucks and semis..... and get the behind-the-wheel driver training to operate the equipment safely
help the vet, YES! Absolutely fine with that. ....... but not at the risk of innocent lives on the highways

Not much training. In the early 80s after we kids were out of high school my dad decided to be a trucker.
One week in Indiana for training and most of it was about paperwork.
It is the < bleeping > second paragraph y'all.
