Something is rotten in the WNBA — as the Sophie Cunningham ‘point’ situation shows how the league is its own worst enemy

The WNBA and its associated entities continue to be their own worst enemies when it comes to maximizing their product.

Any time a good wave comes barreling in, they’d rather watch it crash on the shore than get on and ride it.

It’s been obvious since sensation Caitlin Clark was drafted first overrall by the Indiana Fever in 2024.

In what has become a viral meme, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham points to Phoenix Mercury forward-guard DeWanna Bonner (not seen) following a scuffle.

While there’s a never-ending push to help athletes make more money and grow the league into a sustainable enterprise with a large footprint, the WNBA and the player’s union seem most adept at stifling a good moment.

The latest is the one around the Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham that has launched a thousand memes and imitators.

The image of 29-year-old Cunningham — showing her pointing at opponent DeWanna Bonner after a scuffle in a late June match-up between the Fever and the Phoenix Mercury — went crazy viral.

The intense gesture lasted 22 seconds but, weeks later, it is still very much ensconced in the ether.

Cunningham has posed with young fans eager to reenact the point. When she visited a Special Olympics basketball team, one of the players excitedly mimicked the Fever shooting guard, gushing, “I like when you do this!”

It’s been a boon to Brand Cunningham, which has been soaring since the veteran emerged as the Fever team enforcer last year, when she handed down a hard foul against Jacy Sheldon.

She was rightfully ejected for the borderline assault — but Cunningham’s stock both on and off the court has never been hotter.

Then came the point, which has pushed her to new heights. She was a ring girl at the...

Normally I could care less about the WNBA but I certainly enjoy good memes when they are born!

People like to see the white girls stand up to the lesbian black bullies in the WNBA. The league should tell them to knock it off.

It’s pretty obvious what the issue is with the WNBA, for the most part, the league is filled with African Americans and Lesbians and the two biggest stories in the WNBA are from White Heterosexual women.

In the WNBA you have lesbians on the same team involved in romantic relationships, you also have lesbian on opposing teams involved in romantic relationships, both of which are bad news in terms of keeping the competition of games from being tainted.

Can you imagine the dynamic of a team in the NFL or NBA if two of the players on the team were involved in a gay relationship, it would be a complete disaster, yet, this is relatively common in the WNBA.

But if you ban all the lesbian’s the only thing you’ll have left is Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham... Then what do you do?

I don’t think you ban anyone, but romantic relationships between players on the same team should be discouraged, the same for players on opposing teams.

Just like in certain other corporate environments, office romances are against HR rules.

Unfortunately for the WNBA if they did institute such rules, you would probably have a lawsuit or work stoppage by the players in protest.

Caitlin Clark recorded 45 points, 10 assists, four steals, and two blocks in a 110-107 victory over the Seattle Storm. She shot 11-of-18 from the field (including 6-of-10 on three-pointers) and made 17-of-19 free throws. She became the first player in WNBA history to post a 40-point, 10-assist game. Not bad for a corn-fed, slow-footed white girl from Iowa. I watch Caitlin and Sophie.

Since I was a little boy, I was taught men are savage barbarians, while women are our polite, civilized side that helps maintain our society.

Was I misled?

I wonder how the male athletes feel about having to subsidize a subpar franchise and pay the females out of their salaries.
