The chain, which has more than 4,100 outlets worldwide, said on Monday that the move is a "significant milestone" for the firm - known for its customisable burritos, tacos and bowls.
The announcement has received a mixed response on social media, with many users mocking the decision.
US restaurant chains have often struggled to succeed in the countries in which their dishes originated. Taco Bell no longer has any outlets in Mexico, while Domino's Pizza has pulled out of Italy.
Chipotle boss Scott Boatwright said: "We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country's culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence.
The new restaurant, located in the north-eastern state of Nuevo León near the Texas border, serves as an "important proof-of-concept", the company said.
It plans to open more restaurants in the state and expand into Mexico City in 2027 as part of its collaboration with Mexican restaurant operator Alsea, which also operates brands including Domino's Pizza, Starbucks and Chili's.

Cultural appropriation we mucho. Next thing you know McDonald’s will be opening restaurants in Scotland. Or is McDonald an Irish name?
BOGO Dysentery
“ Cultural appropriation we mucho.”
Just as with language, we enjoy the cuisine of many countries. If we like it, we adopt it and enjoy it. You feel no need to pretend that we invented it.
The English language is filled with words that come directly from other languages. The English language has far more words than any other language and is thus able to say things more precisely than most languages.
The USA is a welcoming country as visitors to the World Cup found out recently. Just come here legally and, if on a visa, go home when it is over.
I think so to.
Chipotle isn’t going to compete with street tacos nor full service restaurants. Yes, if you buy into the stereotypes, you think una anciana is hand rolling burritos every day, but anyone who would get a Chipotle burrito isn’t looking for home cooking anyway, just like you grill up burgers at home but you’re not stopping at McDonalds for anything of the sort.
McDonnell seems to be an Irish variant of the name.
Ray Kroc who started the McDonald's hamburger chain had no connection to the original McDonald name.
Ah. Thank you. Now I know.
In the phrase "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," life is from Anglo-Saxon, liberty and pursuit are from Latin by way of French, and happiness derives from the Old Norse word happ. But if you count and, the and of, all Anglo-Saxon, then 4 out of 7 words are of Anglo-Saxon origin.
“US burrito giant Chipotle opening first outlet in Mexico”. The best food I ever ate was in this small restaurant in Santa Fe, NM.
About 15 years ago, I ate at a Chipotle. I was neither impressed or disappointed. It seemed adequate.
I’ve never been back.
Should I try again sometime?
It hasnt changed in 15 years, so its not better if thats what youre asking :)
And for after dinner there’s Chipotlaway. It gets those poop and blood stains out of the underwear.
Like opening an Olive Garden in Italy.
That’s what I figured.
It ain’t bad but it ain’t “authentic!”
No me gusta!
“Tourists will eat there, however.”
...are there some that are still stupid enough to be a tourist in Mexico>
Lots of places to get McDonalds hamburgers in Hamburg. Per AI:
“There are approximately 35 McDonald’s locations spread across Hamburg, Germany, making it the German city with the highest number of branches.”
Looks like there are also 9 competing Burger Kings there as well.
Per AI, McDonalds has 115 locations in Scotland, with 21 of those in Glasgow.
See!?
Kroc bought McDonalds from Richard and Maurice McDonald, the founders.
I remember one old story, not sure if it's true, that Kroc was selling milkshake machines at the time and got a surprisingly large order from the McDonalds that had him check out the business.
Down there they should rename it “Gringo’s”.
