US burrito giant Chipotle opening first outlet in Mexico

The chain, which has more than 4,100 outlets worldwide, said on Monday that the move is a "significant milestone" for the firm - known for its customisable burritos, tacos and bowls.

The announcement has received a mixed response on social media, with many users mocking the decision.

US restaurant chains have often struggled to succeed in the countries in which their dishes originated. Taco Bell no longer has any outlets in Mexico, while Domino's Pizza has pulled out of Italy.

Chipotle boss Scott Boatwright said: "We are entering Mexico with deep respect for the country's culinary heritage and a commitment to delivering the Chipotle experience with excellence.

The new restaurant, located in the north-eastern state of Nuevo León near the Texas border, serves as an "important proof-of-concept", the company said.

It plans to open more restaurants in the state and expand into Mexico City in 2027 as part of its collaboration with Mexican restaurant operator Alsea, which also operates brands including Domino's Pizza, Starbucks and Chili's.

An American company, selling Mexiian Food to Mexicans in Mexico?

I predict, No bueno.

Tourists will eat there, however.

Why?

Why not?

Maybe Panda Express will start opening restaurants in China and Olive Garden will open restaurants in Italy (starting with Tuscany).

I know, I prefer Dominoes over “real” Italian pizza all day.

I predict, No bueno.

It absolutely can succeed. Chipotle may adjust its stores, staff or ambient music somewhat in Mexico, but otherwise globalism, urbanization, convenience, corporatism has swamped the entire world.

one could have said the same thing about the American hamburger 70 years ago, or Japanese ramen in Japan 40 years ago, but now both have corporate chains offering standardized versions of local food, that are a clean, convenient, recognizable alternative to the local mom-and-pop store.

Chipotle abd Qdoba are San Francisco mission style burritos, subpar versions of that, but it will still probably be something new and different in Mexico.

There is a reason there are no Red Lobsters in Maine. We have the real thing here.
