Two teachers were stabbed during an assault that involved students during dismissal at a Harford County elementary school Tuesday.

Deputies responded to Roye-Williams Elementary School around 3:30 p.m. after a call for assistance from staff.

Deputies arrived to find the two victims suffering from stabbing injuries. Evidence found at the scene was consistent with an attack. No students were hurt during the incident.

So a child decided to stab two teachers. I guess the two teachers disrespected him (by asking him do his schoolwork), so he saw that in his culture, stabbings are the way to stop the disrespect, so he did it.

Is it them, Yogi?

The teachers should have been alert as soon as little Rashid said “You dissin’ me? YOU DISSIN’ ME?”.

> I would hire a private lawyer if I were one of those two teachers <

Yep. As you noted, the union won’t help. Most of them are in bed with administration these days. It’s all about PR.

Quick story:
I’m a retired high school teacher. One day a colleague of mine sent a violent and disruptive student to the principal. The principal sent the student right back to class. The student then attacked my colleague. She was badly injured, and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The school district issued a press release: One of our teachers fell in the hallway and hurt herself. (!)

The teacher got a lawyer, sued the district, and won.

The taxpayers had to pay the settlement. The trash administrators are never held accountable.

...They are just innocent kids...

Not so innocent. They stabbed 2 teachers and may have caused them grievous, life-altering injury.

Ditto:

My husband said at his school one of the teachers was attacked by a known violent student after school - she was older and knew the routine - no help from admin, school district or union.

She hired a private attorney and won $10,000 - I’m sure there was an NDA involved b/c nothing was ever mentioned. She said the $$ paid for her new driveway (she was seriously injured and spent time in the hospital).

Nope. Elementary grades are now 1-5. Middle schools have changed to 6-8th grades.

“2 teachers stabbed in assault involving student at Harford County elementary school”. Not very hot for teacher.

One rotten apple in the barrel. In one school. In a medium sized district with ten schools. Don’t lose sight of the big picture.

True, but it would be helpful — and convenient — to identify at least the state or closest large city in the thread title. Cheers!

I’m a retired high school teacher.
(I taught in a big city, so I don’t know about elsewhere.)

You would be surprised at how many violent assaults are not reported, how many of them don’t make the news. In my experience, for every 1 act of violence that the public knows about, there are 20 they don’t know about.

Administrators are all about PR these days. Gotta make the district look good. Everything else is secondary, including safety.

Often when a teacher is injured, he/she will be offered a deal. Don’t make a fuss, and your recovery time won’t be counted against your sick day total. No need to hurry back.

And sometimes: Don’t make a fuss, and we’ll transfer you to another school in the district. Go ahead, pick a nicer school. Your choice. We’ll get the paperwork done.

My sister taught math to mostly middle school kids and some HS kids for her entire 45 year career. Retired a couple years ago. She was in the Baltimore / DC / Annapolis area, then a magnet school in Baltimore the last 10 years. The stories she tells.

She was really good at it. You can imagine how unruly and challenging those kids were. It took her a while every new school year, but she got through to them and got results. She used to run across many of her former students on the street or while shopping and many of them told her how much influence she had on their lives. Very rewarding.

She saw the number of do-nothing administrators grow TEN times on a per-student basis. She said that they all knew how to teach better than her even though they had never spent a minute in a class. Fortunately, her schools didn’t have a lot of violence.

You wrote “Often when a teacher is injured, he/she will be offered a deal. Don’t make a fuss, and your recovery time won’t be counted against your sick day total. No need to hurry back.” — appalling. But consistent with what I heard from my sister.

When my sister started, the schools and administration were largely white. She saw the huge shift to minority / POC administration and teachers and the broad decline of performance.

It was always funny that, in the faculty lounge, she found that most of the other teachers had strong conservative values (family, hard work, performance, reward, etc) but all voted straight “D” and hated everything “R.” She was amazed at the cognitive dissonance at work there.

At Roye-Williams Elementary, 32% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math, and 40% scored at or above that level for reading.

Since the students at this school rank so low, it could be the kid doing the stabbing was 13 or so years old if the student had been held back.

Of the 0.2% , how many are among the 0.1% being eliminated by the other 0.1% ? Functionally it would appear that’s the way society deals with them, but there is collateral damage.

Graduated 64.

Absolutely ludicrous.

10th grade, we were absolutely shocked and appalled when a JD thug hit a teacher outside our classroom door. It was a first for all of us; no one had any sympathy over his arrest and expulsion.
