The biggest sporting event in world history might have a less-flattering title soon: the most expensive sporting event in world history.
The World Cup, which kicks off June 11 in Mexico City, has become a carnival for the rich so expensive it resembles a monthlong Met Gala. Just last Thursday, FIFA rolled out a $32,970 seat for the July 19 final at MetLife Stadium, triple the cost of its most expensive ticket before then.
Even in the group stage, tickets are priced in the hundreds of dollars. So is parking and, in some cities — including New York and Boston — so is public transit.
Want to take a family of four to Norway-Senegal, the cheapest game available in the New York area?
As of Saturday afternoon, there were four “Category Four” seats in Section 306, the upper corner of the stadium, available for $402.50 apiece on FIFA’s resale site, the cheapest option between the traditional secondary market (StubHub, SeatGeek, etc.), the official resale and what’s left at face value.
That’s $1,610 for tickets, plus if you’re coming in from the city, you’ll have to factor in the $105 NJ Transit ticket per person, which jacks up the total cost to $2,030, still before buying any food or beverages.
Or you could always park. That’ll require paying $225 for a space at American Dream and walking, though, since the general parking lots are being used for fan engagement and enhanced security.
For a 90-minute game, that comes out to $5.64 per person, per minute.
Tickets for the Mets-Cubs game at Citi Field the same night, by the way, can be had for less than $50 a pop. That does, however, require watching the Mets play baseball.

Saw a Taylor Swift ticket on Vivid for the NOLA show. Mezzanine level, last one of four. $78,000. May have included parking. I'm pretty sure it sold. If ya got it, do it. Big event, big prices.
I would not go even it was free.... 😐
In New York City and Los Angeles? Yes.
It's like the Super Bowl.
The perils of globalism in a nutshell. The global rich price out the locals.
I might go to a World Cup game for $15,000 but you’d have to pay me a lot more than the $400 face value to put me through that nonsense. :-P
I was tempted, considering their opening act was the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Fortunately, my brain kicked into gear.
Not interested at all....
Zzzzz
Me either.
I lived in Italy for two years as a kid when my dad got stationed there.
I played my share then because that’s what the Italian kids did.
Even back then I didn’t understand a sport that restricts the players from using two good arms. 🤷♂️
Ask Disney. The NFL. Vegas.
It'll work.
For a while
Eagles play in Arlington next week
Pay $1000 to watch Don Henley complain about Capitalism.
Ah the passing parade. I used to go to many a sports and entertainment show but it’s down to a trickle at best now. Took my sister to a musical for her birthday recently. I still find it weird tickets are now all on your phone these days. It’s hard to put that in an album for memories.
Unless you’re the goalie!......

Welcome to why FIFA wants to be bigger in America. It’s nice having the most popular sport in the world, but Americans spend $$$ on sports. 1 of us is better for the bottom line than 100 South Americans.
It’s soccer, can’t they just wait until some lefty sports reporter reports the score when it’s over?
“Not too far off from going to a concert or NFL game. Rush is playing four concerts in Fort Worth next month, nosebleed seats are around $350 before fees. Eagles play in Arlington next week, tickets are a bit lower, but again, we’re talking extreme nosebleed seats.”
If you are flexible, buy the tickets on the day of the show. A few years ago, our daughter purchased three field level tickets to Taylor Swift at State Farm Stadium in Glendale AZ for about $300 each. A week before the show they were $3,000 each. Our friend’s daughter did the same thing a few weeks later at Mile High Stadium in Denver.
True because the scalpers buy up the tickets and hope that’s the price they’ll get, but as the showtime approaches, they’ll take whatever they can get.
