The body of one of two US soldiers who went missing last week during a training exercise in Morocco has been recovered, the US Army announced on Sunday.
The army has identified the soldier as 27-year-old First Lieutenant Kendrick Lamont Key Jr, a platoon leader and air defence artillery officer from Richmond, Virginia.
A Moroccan military search team found Key's body in the water along the shoreline within about a mile of the cliffs where both soldiers went missing on 2 May.
US and Moroccan forces are using ground, air and maritime assets to continue their search for the other missing soldier.
Both soldiers were participating in African Lion 2026, an annual joint military exercise designed to strengthen operations between US forces, Nato allies, and African nations.
African Lion is the continent's largest annual joint military exercise, and is hosted across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal and Tunisia.
Key studied marketing and business at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the army said. He first entered military service in 2023 and went on to earn an Army Achievement Medal and Army Service Ribbon, according to the army.

No report yet on what happened - what caused them to become missing and what likely killed them??? No answers yet???
Looks like drowning. Few of the blacks i served with in the late 80s-90s could swim confidently. Most could not swim at all.
See this CBS News story from May 5: 1 missing U.S. soldier jumped into water to try to save another, search continues in Morocco, officials say

I missed that story. Thanks.
Looks like the military could enable them to learn to swim.
The link to the source CBS story is contained within the blog post that is the basis for this FR thread.

“Both soldiers were participating in African Lion 2026, an annual joint military exercise designed to strengthen operations between US forces, Nato allies, and African nations.” Tells me a lot, who was driving?
They were part of a group standing on the edge of a cliff to “Observe a sunset”. One fell in and two others jumped in to try to save him. Two went missing, one managed to get back to land.
Agreed!
Sad statistic: over 7% of blacks cannot swim.
Another sad statistic: my 0 key sometimes sticks. 70% of blacks cannot swim.
One fell in and the other jumped in to save him.........
When I grew up, swimming was something of a cultural event. Same gangs, same pool, every weekend. Also when I was a kid, blacks were prohibited from most pools, so they found other ‘cultural’ outlets. Like hoops.
Now they as a culture are in revolt against all the old stereotypes. I know blacks who won’t touch a watermelon. I used to work with a black guy who swore he wouldn’t pick the cotton out of an aspirin bottle (maybe a little tongue in cheek). So it would seem like they as a group still are boycotting swimming pools, to their detriment.
And it bears mention that SCPO Rob O’Neal (Ret), the Navy SEAL who put the first bullet (of what I guarantee you were many) in Osama bin Laden was from Butte Montana. And he grew up never learning to swim. When he enlisted in the Navy, HE COULDN”T SWIM. And, ironically, he signed up specifically so he could be SEAL (obviously misunderestimating at the time how improbable that goal was). But he learned well enough to get through BUD/S.
So there’s probably more White people than you might imagine who can’t swim.
"He's comin', Elizabeth!"
If they had fallen from a cliff they might not have been in much shape to swim regardless.
I think one difficulty blacks have with swimming is on average ( not all) they tend not to have as much fat in their bodies so they aren’t as buoyant as the average white.
True.
All you have to do is learn how to FLOAT...!
I did some cliff-diving on Spain’s Ibiza (island) coastline—opposite Morocco.
After seeing the relatively shallow water below, the scariest sensation was the wind whistling past my ears!
