A hantavirus outbreak aboard a luxury cruise ship that has left three people dead is veering into the fringe.
Online, a growing number of social media users are floating ivermectin as a possible treatment for the rare infectious disease, which can cause life-threatening heart and lung complications.
Yes, you read that right — the antiparasitic drug used in livestock that became a pandemic-era flashpoint after being touted by media figures, politicians and even some doctors as a Covid cure is back in the spotlight.
“Hantavirus is a RNA virus, and ivermectin should work against it,” Dr. Mary Talley Bowden, a Houston-based, board-certified ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, posted on X Wednesday. She also teased that she would soon be selling it directly to Texans, “no prescription needed.”
Her comments were amplified by former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who previously promoted the drug as an alternative Covid treatment.
In a quote of Bowden’s post, the former Georgia Republican wrote: “I actually texted her today and asked what can we treat hantavirus with. I’m so glad she posted it. Ivermectin.”
Greene also suggested that vitamin D and zinc may also be effective against hantavirus, adding: “Those of us who refused to lockdown, mask up, and get vaxxed took the good ole horse paste and also developed natural immunity.”
The one-time congressional firebrand and Bowden aren’t alone. On X, a growing mix of users — from doctors to internet personalities — have been pushing ivermectin as possible hantavirus treatments.
But infectious disease experts say there’s no scientific evidence to support the claims.

Ivermectin a controversial treatment? It worked great for me the last time I had Covid.
Soon when? I get it free so I settle for horse paste, but I'd rather have a bottle of pills.

Hantavirus is a mostly known as a rodent virus, not necessarily a “rat virus”. It’s usually found in mice. But journalists love to sensationalize and hype.
Not sure Ivermectin is effective against the virus. Been using it weekly for over 5 years as a prophylactic. Also monthly with Fenbendizole for the purported anti-cancer effects.
It was a mild winter so I’ve heard rodents are bad this year.

Ivermectin has been in used to treat various cancers since 2018.

Yeah. When im sick my doctor prescribes my meds.
It was fairly easy for me to get Ivermectin during covid but I never ended up needing it, 74 year old #PureBlood here.
It is very difficult to "prove" any claim is true. It is usually very easy "prove" that a claim is false. That is the experiment that needs to happen here.
The passengers are trapped on that plague ship and are not allowed to leave. They could all be given free supplies of Ivermectin, Fenbendazole, Zinc and assorted vitamins to take as they wish.
If those remedies work, the passengers who use them will not get sick. If the remedies do not work, passengers who use them will still get sick.
That is about all the "scientific evidence" we need to support or refute the claims.
It is still a nasty experiment. It might be better to get all those passengers out of their contaminated environment before they get sick and disburse them widely. Hantavirus does not appear to be extremely contagious outside of a closed environment.
One does not do randomized blind clinical testing on patients who may acquire a communicable disease with a 45% mortality rate.
Or get a old international scout going
