Traumatic brain injuries are quickly emerging as the signature wound of the U.S. war with Iran so far, echoing a pattern of post-9/11 wars...
More than 200 U.S. troops have so far been wounded in the war, and at least 140 of those were TBI-related injuries... It’s a surge being driven by Iran’s reliance on one-way attack drones and the concussive blasts they deliver in strikes against American troops in countries across the Middle East, including Kuwait and Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.
Symptoms of TBI can be subtle at first but often linger for years, or even a lifetime, ranging from persistent headaches, fatigue, dizziness and vertigo, to more severe cognitive effects like memory loss, impaired decision-making and difficulty concentrating.
Veterans with TBIs are also nearly twice as likely to die by suicide compared to veterans without a diagnosed brain injury, according to data from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
"If they're near a blast, there should be no doubt they have a TBI," Dr. Jayna Moceri-Brooks, who studies combat-related brain injuries, said. "You can't escape from blast overpressure ... symptoms can be debilitating."
While such injuries have been suffered in warfare for generations, it wasn't until 2011, nearly a decade into the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, that the Army formally made TBIs eligible for the Purple Heart.

I have to wonder if there’s some kind of SHOCK ABSORBING HELMET they could wear when they are deployed but not out in the field. Yes, I know they would be uncomfortable and the troops would hate them but it’s better than a brain injury.
“Symptoms of TBI can be subtle at first but often linger for years, or even a lifetime, ranging from persistent headaches, fatigue, dizziness and vertigo, to more severe cognitive effects like memory loss, impaired decision-making and difficulty concentrating.”
I’m dealing with this now.
It gets worse as you age and get sick. Until recently it was pure denial from medical etc. People denied that TBIs worsen with age.
I feel for them because it sucks. When I was young I was cute and funny and could laugh my way out of the deficits.
I was 26. That was 1974. I went on disability at 60 years of age.
I am NOT diminishing the effects or prevalence of brain injuries. I am laughing at ABC. Poor guys could not get the deaths they are looking for so now are moving down the food chain of gore for the narrative.
I had no idea that TBI is the prevailing injury; I was assuming it would be bullet wounds. Either way, I don’t want a single one of our brave soldiers to be wounded. I hope Trump can finish this in a few days.
What would be the effects of military personnel subjected to nuclear weapons? I suggest far worse, not that I dimish TBI. war is hell, and waging war is not the preferred choice, but with some foes it is the only option open, because they will never negotiate, and Iran leadship falls into that category.
if there were such a proteive gear avaialble, it would have been developed and every member in a war zone would have one isued to them. So, I would assume the answer is there is no such gear that has been developed.
I don’t doubt some people may have been injured, but OTOH, ABC could just be lying. It’s in their blood.
In my visits with the Vet Center I learned TBI is very real and very serious. I was a candidate for it, fortunately testing made it obvious I never had it.
With regards to TBI memory loss, I was informed that even though certain combat events cannot be remembered with TBI, that those same events are still working in the background of ones mind and can create PTSD.
The good news is democrats, which includes journalists, will never have to deal with TBI. That’s because one needs a brain in order to have that particular injury.
Symptoms of TBI can be subtle
Not being snarky, but doc can’t say nothing is wrong with you, has to be something.
Some are real, and some are not, so how do you tell. This is long term diagnoses based on might be.
I don’t know, I think some of the news coverage and political commentary on this whole thing is giving me TBI too.
ALL Volunteer service. Things like this happen in the military.
Leave it to ABC to sensationalize. I want Musk to buy one of the big three networks and make it a true news organization. Fire the entire staff and build anew.
It sucks the big one.
Two potential designs:
This is a very dubious article. Exposure to blasts varies greatly … due to an extremely large number of factors. There are no meaningful data in this article. Everything is approximation and speculation. Note that “the Pentagon was contacted” but no Pentagon spokesman or office is cited. Who was the unnamed military official offered their “guesstimate?
But, if you do chose to worry about TBI from explosions, take some comfort. Those men and women in harms way are risking their lives to put an end the Evil Empire who has occupied Iran and waged war against Americans for 47 year. And we should support them.
How are they becoming injured. I thought this was an air incursion.
How about not starting this war of choice for Isreal? Than your billion dollar overblast helmet will not or never had been needed. Even if such a hat piece it would only be a year before it is figured out how to defeat them. And Not following this war in exact money,400B easy? The 1.5 trillion dollar defense force could have been just like a few years ago hundreds of billions of dollars. Did we really need a plus 50% increase in one year. Raise ones hand if they got a 50% ever.
The MIC will need that extra 500 billion dollars every year because we blew through that much in missiles, shells, and DEI
