Pete Hegseth spent $100,000 on a piano, $2 million on Alaskan King Crab, $7 million on lobster tail, $15 million on steak, $120,000 on ice cream machines, and $12,000 on fruit basket stands… JUST IN SEPTEMBER! (But, tell me again how Somali day care centers are the problem.)

@grok did Pete by a $100K piano? $2M on crabs? $15M on steaks? $120K on ice cream? And $12K on fruit? All in September?

No, Secretary Hegseth didn't personally buy these. Per OpenTheBooks analysis of DoD data, these were Pentagon-wide contracts in Sept 2025 (end of fiscal year "use-it-or-lose-it" spending spike to $93B total): $98k Steinway piano for Air Force chief of staff's official residence; $2M Alaskan king crab, $6.9M lobster tail, $15.1M ribeye steak, $124k ice cream machines, ~$12.5k fruit basket stands—mostly bulk for base dining/facilities. Standard gov pattern, not unique to him.

The US Navy has not.

And Enterprise was the only ship so classified.

Why does a guy like Pete need a $12,000 fruit basket?

When I was in USAF, served at Yokota AB, Japan,1984 - 1986. The base dining facility (chow hall, for you grunts and swabbies) served a formal steak dinner quarterly.

Everyone had to wear standard dress blue uniform. The dining room featured table cloths and candles.

All Marines get default respect from me, because they got through USMC boot camp!

When I was a kid living in Yokosuka, Japan, I was eight years old. I didn’t have an ID card yet, so I couldn’t go off base by myself. But there was an old battleship, the Mikasa (a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War Battle of Tsushima) set up in concrete as as memorial. It was right on the water’s edge on the northern(I think) edge of the base.

Right where the fence came up, you could lift the fence and crawl under it, which is what I would do. Then, I would wander around off base, looking at all the strange things...plastic food...pachinco ball parlors...and the smell. It was the mixed smell of human waste, fish and car exhaust. Everything to me was completely alien, as if I had been dropped off on another planet.

To get back on the base, I would just walk in. The Marines guarding the gate would never ask you, because you were a kid and if you got off base, then you must have a card.

One afternoon (around 5:30 PM) when I was going back on base, the Marines at the Main Gate stopped me as I tried to saunter back onto the base. They took me inside the guard shack and sat me in a metal chair. There were five of them, wearing the blue trousers with the red stripe, khaki shirt on top and the white cover. As I sat in the chair, they hovered menacingly around me, arms crossed. “How do we know you aren’t a spy”? they asked me. I said I wasn’t, and one of them said “Okay...who won the 1967 World Series?” My favorite player happened to be Lou Brock at the time, so I knew it was the Cardinals. It is funny to look back on now.

I wasn’t a spy, and I didn’t think at all that they thought so either...but they were awfully serious, and I thought they might simply be messing with me while waiting for the Shore Patrol and the Master at Arms to come down and pick me up...just having some fun. As I look back now, I realize they fully knew who I was, because my dad was the head of security on the base at the time...:)

For me, FRiend, onions are the most repellent food known to man. Given that liver seems to be commonly paired with onions, it is no surprise that can’t stomach liver!

I recall landing at Yokota AFB back in 1967 when my dad got orders to Yokosuka, and I stared wide eyed at a long row of F-4 Phantoms in that black, green, and tan camouflage of the time.

Before that, I had wasted many classroom hours drawing Phantoms instead of listening to the teachers, and had never seen a real Phantom before!

Lets hope they don’t use the same people who repair the McDonalds ice cream machines!

Now THAT would be a scandal!

DOW/DOD spending/contracts are a matter of public record...just takes some digging/research.

https://www.usaspending.gov

There is a “black budget”, but that does not include things like food or pianos (the $98,329 Steinway & Sons grand piano went to the AF Chief of Staff’s house).

The summary is linked below if you don’t have time to “Dig”:
