But a new study has found a growing connection between cannabis use and detrimental effects on mental health. Smoking weed has previously been found to have an impact on the brain by altering dopamine activity that closely resembles patterns observed in psychosis.
Now, a study led by McMaster University and published in The Canadian Journal of Psychiatry has shown that increasing cannabis use and worsening mental health symptoms are appearing together more and more often.
“We see that Canadians who use cannabis tend to be more likely to meet criteria for anxiety and depressive disorders, and more likely to report suicidality,” said Jillian Halladay, an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at McMaster. “We also see that this co-occurrence has strengthened over time.”

Canuckadans? Depressed?
I’d be depressed too if I was stuck in that God-forsaken third world shithole.
Just about everyone feels that mental illness has increased in the past 5 - 10 years. Everything feels off. People are different. Public areas are haunted by “Karens”. There is so much “disinformation” — who can you trust? What is real?
I’m sure there are multiple reasons for this current state of widespread unease. But cannabis usage is certainly a factor.
All these psychoactive drugs that work on dopamine and serotonin levels and receptors are poison.
I watched this development personally in 25 years of working as an EMS first responder. Pot is obviously associated with increased mental illness. I have been ridiculed right here in River City for making this observation for many, many years. Booze are bad; pot is worse.
I remember how this sometimes caused me depression in the 80s when I could not find any.
Today I could care less.
There is huge correlation between marihuana use and schizophrenia.
And smoking dope causes cancer and all other health problems associated with cigarettes.
Fully agreed. A large part of it was the covid shutdown. Fear, isolation, the non-stop illogical propaganda, the pitting of us all against one another (my family has shut me out, as I chose not to be ‘vaccinated’ due to my general good health and concern over certain side effects...), stunted childhood development, etc. This combined with dramatic increases in use of the internet for work, for meetings, etc., all came on suddenly and transformed our society. Add in wild increases in insurance and basic goods like fuel and groceries, and there you have it. Too much change, and not any of the good kind. Much damage was done, and the walking wounded (of which I am a part, still) are many. We’re all trying to get our bearings, and realizing that in the haze of the past few years, the middle class was entirely gutted out. Huh. Imagine that...
True.
You’ll get ridiculed here on FR, too, but I noticed that decades ago when I watched some bright, ambitious, attractive friends of mine drop out of college and turn into pot heads who were just looking for their next drink, their next hit, and their next guy.
just wait until they discover pot smoke gives you lung cancer the same as cigaretes
I don’t know, but I’m getting depressed reading this article....
Why?
You are not allowed to insult pot, may peace be upon it.
You mean you were depressed you couldn’t find a hookup?
Control the allowed THC amount, it’s too strong these days.
Overdoing anything is bad.
The same exact thing can be said of ALCOHOL use. ALCOHOL is poisonous to the body.
Potheads are the most annoying. Drinks and tweakers won’t preach to you that their drug is ultimate solution to the ills of the world. Potheads become dope evangelists all too often. They aren’t addicted, oh no. They just use it every day because it brings nirvana and you should smoke it too.
LOL. Yes, but the media and government incessantly talk bout the dangers of alcohol, at the same time, they only talk about how wonderful marijuana is and try to downplay, or hide anything negative.
