Washington — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Friday that the Pentagon would be canceling troops' attendance at graduate programs at some of the nation's top universities, calling them "woke breeding grounds of toxic indoctrination."
"Today, just like we did with Harvard, I am ordering the complete and immediate cancellation of all Department of War attendance at institutions like Princeton, Columbia, MIT, Brown, Yale and many others, starting next academic year, 2026-2027," Hegseth said in a video statement.
"We cannot and will not continue to send our most capable officers, senior officers, into graduate programs that undermine the very values they have sworn to uphold," Hegseth said.
The Pentagon announced earlier this month that it would be ending all military training, fellowships and certificate programs with Harvard amid the Trump administration's adversarial relationship with the Ivy League school.
Hegseth accused the universities of becoming "factories of anti-American resentment and military disdain."

At risk of likely starting a flame war here... It’s not cut and dry... I wholeheartedly agree they have become total BS, but the devil is in the details. There are numerous institutions that are part of the intern, research, and development portion of our MIC (Military Industrial Complex). Does this impact that? We need centers of excellence for our best and brightest to be able to go to make impact, bring ideas, learn, research etc., for our IC and DoW. We have a crisis today, because the amount of time it takes our industrial base to get connectivity to special environments is quite literally a disaster. If some of these uni’s are already connected to allow classified access new locations I’ve heard can take upwards of 18 to 36 months just to establish connectivity. In the next 2 years, we don’t have that kind of time, we will need a rapid approach to establish connectivity to drive our capability, to get access to innovative minds.
What I would hope is this isnt’ just an extraction, but a doubling down on the Uni’s that do support the mission, and goals of our country. I really think it’s a poor idea just to signal “Peach out!”. But frankly lately I grow less convinced of Hegseth and his propensity to react and threaten. I suppose there are two approaches to leading Carrot, and Stick. But using the Stick on the Industrial base is a recipe for disaster, and basically will guarantee products that don’t innovate, but stagnate.
This is such a huge topic, with so many downstream impacts, secondary, tertiary, unknowns, impacts to R&D. I want those in R&D energized, focussed on missions, improving our lethality, improving our response times etc. I just hope we don’t lose focus on the long-term health for short term political Hashtags.
Generals in skirts are furious.
Thank God for Trump!
Excellent move!
Those timeframes you speak of could be more a result of the purposeful corruption of those systems by those very institutions Hegseth and the War Department are calling out. This includes cleaning out the deadwood and snakes from The Pentagon and War Department itself which is clearly well underway.
With new attitudes, new approaches, and a focus on a new set of academic partners who love their country and are dedicated to the singular mission of the military, I believe you will see this energy and focus you are worried about.
Don’t agree with this. You need a military presence as a bulwark. My son is on 4-year ROTC scholarship at Michigan. It’s a very liberal school. But you have to remember a school with thousands of kids still has thousands of conservatives. Yeah they may be outnumbered 2 to 1 or worse, but you still need to “resist” as the moon bats say.
My brother-in-law is a Naval Academy grad. He’s a very smart engineer egg head. The Navy fully funded his PhD program at MIT. He’s one of the biggest Trump supporters I know.
Isn’t he a graduate of Harvard and Princeton?
Notice how the media is being used by Trump and staff. They have to respond to Trump.
Trump came to divide and unite. The point of division and unification is the same point.
The secretary also said he would be initiating a “top-to-bottom review” of the war colleges to ensure they are “wholly dedicated to the singular mission of developing the most lethal and effective leaders and war fighters the world has ever known.”
Hegseth himself holds degrees from Princeton and Harvard.
“requirement mandated as part of the bargain creating land-grant colleges”
Which is why I have advocated on this site that the land grants under the Morrill Act be rescinded at offending “universities”.
In particular the University of California in toto should be shut down and the land repurposed to either federal use or sold off for housing or commercial development.
The people occupying that land and those buildings have no claim on it and are actively abridging the original agreements under the Morrill Act.
Excellent.

Hey, Bondi time get up to speed with Hegseth and indict and convict the known traitorous conspirators (many educated at our “elite” universities ... looking at Obama et al) who forged and implemented the coup against Trump and those who voted for him. A home-grown color of revolution (again master-minded at our elite universities) to permanently destroy the Republic and “for which it stands: one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.”
I'm so glad they are doing this. Putting their money where their mouth is.
And many of those institutions are recruitment sites for spies against us.
These institutions have made it abundantly clear that they report to entities outside the United States, and not just Communist China.
Yes indeed...very good news.
Will this message be published in College Station?
Sorry, Hegseth!
This is a recipe for making these universities even MORE woke!
By the way, I am MIT SB and Harvard PhD, and was a faculty member and administrator at another university that he is probably targeting!
Sounds like a good move.
