Many factors influence how long you live, such as diet, exercise, smoking, drinking, environment and other variables. It also helps not to get hit by a dump truck. But what about your genes? That has been a contentious question for decades.

A new study points to a larger role for genetics than previous research had indicated, estimating the contribution of genes to determining human lifespan at about 50 per cent. That is roughly double what prior research concluded, and it mirrors the findings of lifespan studies in laboratory animals.

"Lifespan is undoubtedly shaped by many factors, including lifestyle, genes and, importantly, randomness - take for example genetically identical organisms raised in similar environments that die at different times," said Ben Shenhar, a doctoral student in physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and lead author of the study published on Thursday in the journal Science.

This hasn't been "contentious" to us Bible believers. Looks like science is finally catching up to advice the Bible gave us a long time ago. Almost 2,000 years ago the Apostle Paul told us in 1 Corinthians 7:2-5 that a husband and wife should be getting into each other's jeans.

Well my husband will probably live to be 140...had an ancestor who was longest living white guy in Northeast America when he died at 100, in 1698.

Does that mean the impact of all our other ‘bad factors’ just reduced by half?

Dad = 86
Mom 99

I wonder if it’s actual genes/DNA that causes this. It could be that you inherit parent(s) outlook on life, sense of humor, etc., and that is what determines probable life span.

multiple people on both sides of my family made it to 100, and better yet... they didn’t even start looking that old until the 90’s, no hair loss and none went entirely gray or white ever.

A relative I never met lived to be 102. She llved about 20 miles away and had been trying to find me for decades. Sad I never met her...we were somewhat alike. Only family members to live near the beach in SoCal in family of mid-westerners.

Gen 5:5 Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.
......
......
.......
Gen 5:31 Lamech lived 777 years, and then he died.

Gen 6:3 Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”

Looks like Adam and his kin did something that affected how long we live. Wonder what it was....................
