It’s sweet that the people honor the dead elephants. To Hindus, the elephant symbolizes power and wisdom and Ganesha, one of the best loved of their pantheon, has the head of an elephant.

Were they crushed by all of the jeets hanging off of the train?

“In a freak accident, 7 elephants were killed after a Rajdhani Train collided with a herd of elephants.” In all the things I read today, that is the most unusual.

It’s a problem in India. There was an incident last year where 11 were killed in a similar accident.

"It’s a problem in India. There was an incident last year where 11 were killed in a similar accident."

Along with big cats, bears, and boars, the Indian government long since has taken the position to try to ‘shoo’ the wild elephants away from populated areas but otherwise not try to restrain their movements, and deal with the consequences — including the inevitable losses of human life — as they occur. Elephants kill more Indians than tigers, by a wide margin. Plus they wreak havoc on farms.

How do you think they should be managed?

I’ve read that they are starting to use several AI systems to track the elephants, alert to problems and migrations, etc.

The elephants usually have the right of way when encountering cars and buses. These probably thought the same would happen.

"How do you think they should be managed?..."

I make no pretense to knowing how to resolve any of the myriad problems facing India. With so many native sects in perpetual conflict, it's miraculous their government is even marginally functional, and anything they might change to try to improve any aspect of life is like a giant game of Jenga.
