Brown shooter revealed to be Portuguese national and former PhD student who killed MIT professor before being found dead at storage facility

The gunman who killed two students at Brown University was found dead in a storage unit after murdering an MIT professor as their decades-old connection was revealed.

The suspect - 48-year-old Claudio Neves Valente - was revealed to be a Portuguese national who studied at the Ivy League school in Rhode Island more than 20 years ago.

He had attended Brown to pursue a masters of science in physics from 2000 to 2001, before he took a leave of absence and ultimately withdrew from the school.

It remains unclear why Neves Valente opened fire at the Rhode Island school, killing Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, of Virginia, and Ella Cook, of Alabama, 19.

But University President Christina Paxson said it was likely he took classes inside that building when he attended the school.

Neves Valente opened fire during a study session at the Ivy League's School of Engineering Barus and Holley Building on December 13.

Two days later, he fatally shot MIT Professor Nuno Loureiro inside his Boston home.

Authorities revealed that gunman original target was Loureiro and the pair had attended the same school in Portugal from 1995 to 2000.

It was unclear what the shooter's motive was or what his relationship with Loureiro had been.

The suspect was ultimately found dead after a six-day manhunt, when authorities located a vehicle he used parked outside of a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire - more than 80 miles from the Ivy League school.

Still, a massive gov’t coverup just doesn’t make sense. Ditto pretty much ANY massive coverup, gov’t or not. In this case, IIRC it was stated over 500 Federal agents alone were working the case.

I tend to agree with Heinlein: Without very specialized security structures in place, no group of over 3 people can keep a secret for long. For sure the agencies involved in this investigation do not have, all taken, that sort of structure.

I thought they said they didn't have any evidence the shootings were related. That's not the same as ruling it out. Granted that the R.I. press conferences early on were sort of fuster-uh, you know...

If it wasn’t for the guy who worked with the Providence PD to help locate the killer, what then? He was volunteer “boots on the ground” for them and did the right thing. I’d hate to see him be punished for his good deed. If there was a reward I think they owe it to him, while the Brown University president should resign immediately.

Authorities identified the shooter as Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, 48, a Portuguese national from Miami. Officials said he was born in Torres Novas, Santarem, Portugal and was a legal permanent resident of the United States.

Foley revealed that Neves Valente and Loureiro were former classmates at an academic program in Portugal between 1995 and 2000.

It's not clear if the two men remained in touch.

Neves Valente was a PhD student at Brown University from 2000 until 2001 and only studied physics, according to a university spokesperson. He took a leave of absence from the Ivy League school in April 2001 before officially unenrolling in 2003.

While the motive remains unclear, surveillance video from Loureiro's Brookline neighborhood allegedly showed the gunman in the area days before the deadly shooting, according to Foley.

On Dec. 15, investigators said video from inside the nuclear physicist's apartment showed Neves Valente wearing a specific set of clothes before shooting Loureiro in the lobby.

Hours later, surveillance video from a storage unit facility in Salem, New Hampshire showed the gunman wearing the same thing that was caught on the Brookline cameras, according to Foley.

Neves Valente was found dead inside the storage facility on Thursday, Dec. 18. Authorities said he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
