'Like a sudden bomb': See photos from space of Ethiopian volcano erupting for first time in 12,000 years

A volcano in Ethiopia erupted for the first time in at least 12,000 years on Sunday, sending a cloud of ash and smoke northeast across the Red Sea.

Hayli Gubbi, a volcano in the Afar region of northern Ethiopia, erupted at around 8:30 a.m. UTC (3:30 a.m. EST) on Nov. 23. By 8 p.m. UTC (3 p.m. EST), the explosive phase of the eruption had stopped, according to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) in France.

This is the first time Hayli Gubbi is known to have erupted in the Holocene — the present geological epoch that began at the end of the last ice age, around 11,700 years ago. Generally, if a volcano hasn't erupted in the Holocene, it is considered extinct.

“ Wait until the DEMs get back in control and Islam takes a foothold in the country. You’ll be wishing for a correction of some kind.”

Calm down.
Take a walk, volunteer at a food bank.

One thing I’d love to see is that volcano in Hawaii that slowly oozes lava into the ocean. I think that would be really cool to see.

I was on the Big Island w/family in 2016 and hiked 5 miles to active lava flows. Accessible by walking trail and visited by many natives and tourists while I was there.

There's something amazing about watching Earth recreate itself in real-time. My son was 15 and will never forget the experience. Try to do it. You won't regret it.

In stark contrast to a slow bomb.

Actually, they could probably pin it down pretty closely using sedimentation data. The top layers of earth are like tree rings.

I am sure there are quite a few Krakatoas out there.

I once described them to my young daughter as “pimples” that can just fester for a long time before popping. The bigger and redder…the more dramatic the “pop.”

Her middle school teacher thought that was gross comparison.

I seem to recall that there are 52 active volcanos in the world currently.
With Etna on the east side of Sicily the most active.
There was just an article the other day of a crack opening up on the side of it. Where they did not suspect it would.

The thing about Etna is that the city of Catania, Sicily(300K) is just to the south about 25 miles away. Taormina is just to the north about 40 miles.
There are a million people living relatively close by. Yet they go about their lives while it just blows ash into the air on a regular basis. Occasionally, shutting down the airport.

I wonder if this one is responsible for the magnificent, extremely colorful sunsets we have been having in Dec 2025.

Possible, although I would think it would be more of an impact locally. When we’ve had lots of fires here in Idaho, we’ve had lovely sunsets & sunrises. A few years ago we were driving home from Boise, with a full moon coming up in the east & the sun setting in the west, both colored very red from all the smoke. It would’ve made a hell of a panoramic picture. Didn’t have my camera with me. Drat!
