Walmart is proving to be America’s antidote to the cost of living crisis.
A growing number of Americans are heading to Walmart for groceries and clothing as inflation and high prices squeeze their budgets: Walmart’s business in the United States is surging and it’s gaining market share from rivals, the company said Thursday in its quarterly financial report.
Walmart has used its massive size and scale to drive down prices and pour billions of dollars into investments such as raising wages, sprucing up stores and building a logistics network for online shopping.
These investments are paying off for Walmart at a moment when many Americans’ finances are stretched.
Last quarter, Walmart’s US sales increased 4.5%. Walmart saw an uptick in customer trips to stores, and shoppers spent more when they visited. Walmart also raised its sales and profit guidance, signaling it expects a strong holiday shopping season.
Walmart’s gains have been led by middle-class and upper-income households turning to its stores and website to try to save money.
“We’re gaining market share, improving delivery speed, and managing inventory well,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in a news release. “We’re well positioned for a strong finish to the year and beyond that.”
McMillon announced Friday that he’s retiring soon as CEO after 11 years. He’ll be succeeded in February by John Furner, who heads Walmart’s US operations.
Walmart is gaining over Target in particular. Target’s sales have stagnated for around four years.
One major advantage Walmart has over Target is its grocery business.
Shoppers make frequent trips to stores to pick up groceries, and Walmart has made improving its produce section a top priority in recent years. The company has also narrowed the gap with Target on apparel and home goods.

You can only reduce so far.
Target has always been a rip-off. Learned that 30 years ago.
My two grocery shopping choices are a Super Walmart and a Piggly Wiggly. I use The Pig more than Walmart. We also have a Dollar Tree which I use for a few household things. For some reason I’m locked out of my Walmart account on-line so can no longer order groceries for pick up.
No one in ‘Help’ seems to be able to help. Oh, well. I’ll live.
All so tempting! Food from Walmart, Dollar General, or Target!
Don't forget Target's trans woke policies turning off many shoppers. They went woke and went broke. Believe it or not, lots of women don't want to be preached at to share restrooms with men, and Target was one of the first to do so.
Once the competition is eliminated, Walmart will be forced to raise prices to pay for the money they spent eliminating the competition.
LOL!
The price of meat at Walmart’s near us are TERRIBLE compared to every other grocery store. And its not even close.
Everything else is cheaper...but their meat section sucks.
Seems to be heading that way, though Target has helped them greatly with their stupid trans/men in the Ladies Room policies.
Walgreen’s did it, too. I rarely shop there.
Meat has always been one thing my wife did not buy at Walmart.
But have you seen the new ballroom, folks?
During the four years of the Joe Pedo race riot, the U.S. got 20 million more Walmart Shoppers. Show me the moron who never thought the prices of everything wouldn’t go up.
So inspiring!
That was always the fear but in reality Walmart has had just the opposite effect, lowering prices through its scale and volume.
Walmart for groceries?!
They have Walmart only SKUs to get around price competition. So, that Jack Link’s beef jerky might seem cheaper, until you look and find it is one half-ounce lighter. The Red Rose tea bags have the same number, but are missing the individual paper wrappers to maintain freshness.
The produce is pre-weighed, and frankly, is no bargain.
They have had as much inflation as anyone else. Those little 50 cent blueberry pies are now 85 cents.
Where you are Diana, Woodman’s is generally as a good a deal or better.
Where I am, Winco, American Discount Foods (for REALLY crazy closeouts), Smart & Final, and loss leaders/Clearance at Fry’s (Kroger) and Safeway/Albertson’s. Avocados at the Mexican “Food City”.
Clothing has shot up a lot at Walmart, probably because of the tariffs.
Clothing could be made on automated equipment.
Amazon should probably develop standard clothing and shoe patterns.
If I know an 8W3 shoe and a 14N1 shirt will fit, I could buy with confidence.
We’ve always shipped primarily at Walmart. More for the convenience than the prices, but we believe the prices are lower than grocery stores.
Agreed. I was shocked when I looked at their prices for beef! We grow out a beef steer every 18 months for our beef. We’re buying a whole hog from a neighbor in a few weeks. The only meat I need to buy is some chicken for variety time to time. And they want $11 for a whole chicken these days - cheaper to buy the $8 deli chicken at The Pig! We have plenty of wild game, too.
Pretty sure we’ll be adding meat birds along with our laying hens in the near future if prices stay high.
I’ve always been good with a grocery budget - it’s really the only place where you actually have some wiggle room.
Grow your own if you can, raise your own if you can. Shop the sales (Loss Leaders) and plan meals around what’s on sale. Learn to can and preserve. Glean. Use the Food Pantry if you need to - most don’t have income restrictions. This is America. There are PLENTY of ways to get yourself fed. :)
Dollar General should try lowering their prices. They are far more expensive than Walmart on most things.
