In today’s weather forecast, we are talking about a rare and spectacular northern lights display expected to light up skies across much of the United States. tonight. A powerful geomagnetic storm is underway, allowing the aurora to be visible as far south as the central Plains, Ohio Valley, and even parts of the Deep South. Skies will need to be clear and dark, so head away from city lights for the best chance to see it. Infrastructure impacts, like power grid issues, cannot be ruled out. This is one of the most widespread aurora events in years, get all the latest details in today’s forecast.

Big enough flares to cancel NASA’s Escapade launch scheduled for today.
I have mostly cloudy skies here, which is typical for Maryland in late autumn.
The local TV fear-porn peddlers her in OK are already busily running to and fro, trying to convince us that pearls are specifically made for clutching and that we’re surely DOOOOOOOOOMED !!!
Northern lights (aurora borealis) — What they are and how to ...The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is a natural light display in the Earth’s northern hemisphere caused by solar particles colliding with gases in the upper atmosphere. We saw that here in central KS last night. First time in my life. Spectacular.
Up where I worked, I saw a bit of red in the Aurora Borealis. Usually, when the Northern lights are lighting up my sky, I get only the green.
For those toward the south, check for your opportunity to see Northern lights because you might see them when you usually don’t.
Haven't seen one in quite a few years now.
Here is a fact that most people don’t know about the Northern Lights. The colours you see indicates the elements that are hitting earth’s atmosphere.
The green color in the northern lights (aurora borealis) is primarily produced by **oxygen** atoms.
### How It Works
- When charged particles from the Sun (solar wind) collide with Earth’s upper atmosphere (about 100–300 km altitude), they excite oxygen atoms.
- These excited oxygen atoms then release energy as light when returning to their ground state.
- **Green light** (wavelength ~557.7 nm) is the most common emission from oxygen at these altitudes.
### Other Colors for Context
- **Red**: Higher-altitude oxygen (>300 km).
- **Blue/purple**: Nitrogen molecules.
- **Pink/red edges**: Nitrogen at lower altitudes.
The iconic emerald green dominates because oxygen is abundant and the 557.7 nm emission is strong under typical auroral conditions.
The chances of getting wiped out by a giant solar flare are small...but not zero.
I’m in Hawaii. We never see anything.
Tis the season for rain and high winds.
I actually enjoyed that movie as science fiction
Spaceweather site says it hit last night.
The aurora really showed out even down here in the south last night. I got some pretty decent pictures of it. Looking forward to hopefully getting a better glimpse at it tonight. Sounds like it’s going to be even stronger.
