For decades, Americans have been advised that cutting fat was key for a heart-healthy diet, spurring an industry of low-fat dairy products. A new generation of nutrition research is challenging some of those long-held beliefs—suggesting that for dairy products, the overall effects of whole-fat varieties on heart health may be positive.
A new study adds to this shift. Using data from more than 3,100 participants in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, researchers tracked dairy consumption and measured coronary artery calcification—a buildup of calcium in the arteries that can be an early sign of heart disease.
Study participants were first surveyed in the mid-1980s, when they were between the ages of 18 and 30, and then tracked over the following 25 years. Using advanced statistical modeling, researchers looked at how different types of dairy predicted the presence of coronary artery calcification later in life. The results found:
—Whole-fat dairy appeared protective against coronary artery calcification. Participants who consumed the most whole-fat dairy had a 24% lower risk of developing coronary artery calcification compared with those who consumed the least.
—Low-fat and total dairy showed no clear relationship with risk of coronary artery calcification. Intakes of low-fat and total dairy products were not significantly linked to the presence of this heart disease marker.
—Body weight may play a role. The protective effect of whole-fat dairy weakened slightly after researchers adjusted for participants' body mass index (BMI), suggesting that the slightly lower average BMI of those who consume dairy may partly explain the association.
"People who consumed more whole-fat dairy in young adulthood were less likely to have early heart disease decades later," said Ethan Cannon.

It does’t know why, but digging into my own memory, I recall taking CLA (Conjugated linoleic acid) capsules in the 90s, of which full fat dairy had a reasonable amount. It was to help burn fat.
My teacher was British for what that is worth.
very interesting.
Love and Death was right.
wow.
Did they do the study by race? White, Anglo-Saxon people tolerate milk better than other folks. I’ve been drinking low fat milk my whole 71 year life. No heart problems. Although I just got done beating liver cancer. Who knows. Just enjoy yourself. We’re not on this planet as long as you might think.
Growing up my mother was big on feeding us whole milk and real butter. Want dessert? Grab an apple, kid.
Fat is not the boogeyman the medical establishment has made it out to be.
It's critical for brain health and development in children. IIRC, breastmilk is high in fat.
It also matters what kind of fat is being ingested.
You are correct.
Thanks Mom, I should have stuck with it. But I’m fine now 6-7 decades later even with high hereditary cholesterol.
Insulin resistance causes arterial plaque. Sugar, carbs, grains…cholesterol is healthy. The higher, the better. RFK Jr. is going to try to mainstream this information. Those of us in Keto World have known this, but studies are beginning to sneak by the gate keepers.
Meanwhile, if you want to be metabolically healthy, particularly as you age, get rid of the oatmeal, cereal, bread, seed oils, anything low-fat. Concentrate on high saturated fat red meat, egg yolks, all the stuff they told you was bad.
And for the love of God, STOP TAKING STATINS! Worry about your triglycerides, A1c, fasting glucose, and let the LDL and HDL fly.
I’ve been carnivore for over two years now and it’s so amazing I want to share it with everyone. I eat 10% milk fat Greek yogurt after dinner. Raw high fat dairy is healthy, that’s why the Amish go to prison for sharing it lol.
Full Fat EVERYTHING is very important for babies and brain development - for man and beast!
I raise Treeing Walker Coon Hounds and Plott Hounds and I feed my puppies Milk Replacer long after they are able to eat solid kibble. Weaned by 7-8 weeks, then another few weeks with kibble AND milk replacer, then just kibble.
The results have been amazing. They are happy, healthy and SMART as heck. Well socialized, etc. I get a lot of positive comments on the ‘quality’ of the pups I raise from their owners. Yes, good breeding is a part of it, but even the ‘Oops’ pregnancy we had last fall into winter resulted in fine bear hunting dogs.
Shawnee and Mandan were proof of that this past bear season. :)
Because the Brits surely know teeth!
Drank whole milk all my life and still do. Good bones...still slim....no meds. Good genes.
Eat well rounded home made meals...no snacks...no soda except for my Root Beer float binges a couple times a year.
Drinking skim milk in the United States is harmful because sellers add retinol supplements to it.
It’s all about Vitamin K2.
