The body of 21-year-old student Demartravion “Trey” Reed was found hanging in a tree on the campus of Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi on Monday. Campus police chief Michale J. Peeler told reporters no foul play is suspected and the death is considered a suicide, despite no official cause of death yet being released by the county coroner’s office.
Members of Reed’s family have stated both his arms and one of his legs were also broken, however police have disputed this.
"At this time, there is no evidence of foul play," Peeler said. "But while there is no evidence of foul play, the body has been retrieved by the Bolivar County Coroner's office. I have requested the assistance of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Bolivar County Sheriff's office and the Cleveland PD to assist us in this ongoing investigation."
The death comes after a week of heightened violent rhetoric online following the death of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. Multiple Historically Black Colleges and Universities were forced to take emergency measures including class cancellations and lockdowns last week after repeated threats.
The hanging of a black man in the south hauntingly calls back to the days of Jim Crow. Members of the community say the significance cannot be ignored given the current state of U.S. politics.

That is very sad. Maybe he owed someone money or tried to be nice to another’s lover. Maybe he argued against the assassination of Charlie Kirk. There are 1000s of reasons for the attack.
Conservatives have nothing against black people. Many conservatives ARE people of color.
Exactly, the words “in an apparent suicide” would certainly have made a less incendiary sounding headline.
Adding: why the long, drawn out history of hangings in the South? THOSE were committed mostly by Democrats.

Well something the media can use to set aside Charlie Kirk’s assassination and begin to memory hole it.
In other supposed black suicides, the family or troublemakers come out and say “black youth” don’t do suicide, or me black child would not.

Suicide or murder, terrible to see a young life ended.
Sadly, instead of letting the investigation be completed and outcome shared, this will be politicized and conclusions made quickly. Assumptions will be treated as truths. The author of this story is treading on doing so.

In my locality in the UK a white man was found dead hanging from a tree. It has not made the news.

Unless his social media shows pro-Turning Point content. He has a LOT of black young men in his crowd. It’s possible, I guess.
Whether he killed himself or not, this is no good. It will cause unrest and evil events. Seriously hope the investigation reveals that he did truly indeed, hang himself.
