A mother’s chili secret has gone viral in a TikTok video that has some loving the added ingredient while others are in disbelief.
The video was posted by the Hnieno Fam, a family-oriented TikTok account centered on a London mother and a father of two.
Jade Hnieno, the mom of the family, shared the video last month, revealing the mysterious addition: a square of dark chocolate added directly to the pot. “Secret ingredient to make the best chili,” she captioned the video.

Not a big secret. I learned about that at Epcot Center in the ‘80s.
Some secret. TikTok is full of dopes! Never been. Not gonna go.
Like Water for Chocolate
by Laura Esquivel
“’Like Water for Chocolate’ is a 1989 novel by Mexican novelist and screenwriter Laura Esquivel. It was first published in Mexico in 1989. The English version of the novel was published in 1992. The novel follows the story of a young woman named Tita, who longs for her beloved, Pedro, but can never have him because of her mother’s upholding of the family tradition: the youngest daughter cannot marry, but instead must take care of her mother until she dies.”
Great book. Taught me all I needed to know about using dark chocolate in Mexican traditional dishes. And all about Love. ;) And how nine times out of ten it IS your Mother’s Fault that you’re not living the life you long for, LOL! (The movie was pretty good, too.)
My secret ingredient in my Chili is beer and BACON. And, PLEASE! People! There is NO friggin’ Macaroni in Chili! Even this Yankee knows that! ;)
When I think of cinnamon in chili, I’m reminded of the Cincinnati style chili.
Well at least it tasted like it had cinnamon in it.
If you are looking for a secret ingredient, the truly unique bitter-turned-savory-turned-sweet note (which is why dark chocolate in the first place), shred and I mean obliterate two fair-sized baby carrots and they go in right at the beginning, and they do something unique with that carotene and bliss out during cooking. People have mistaken that for leek, rutabega, you name it.
Then the other one and this is no secret. 1/2 cup of cane sugar Coca-Cola as the sole source of sugar.
No other nation in history has ranged as far around the world and amassed as many spices and not used any of them.
Dont forget to add a bottle of beer to the chili!
The other one is outraged!
I was expecting the story to say that she put beans in the chili. Beans do not belong in Chili under any circumstances.
Blasphemous.
I’m a cinnamon in coffee fan.
I will have to try it. I assume you put in with the ground coffee to brew?
Yes.
Bernal Diaz del Castio wrote that Montezuma once threatened to kill Cortez and eat his flesh with mole. From that we can assume that mole was the Aztec's preferred sauce for human flesh.
I would have guessed “liberal tears”
”Schnitzers.”
Just goes to show that "ticktokers" are just a bunch of ignorant kids.
I’ve heard that about Cincinnati but everyone I know that uses it, uses it like salt. My understanding is cinnamon is used to enhance the pepper type spices not impart a flavor.
Waste of good chocolate.
I add brown sugar and a little cinnamon to hide the heat for a bit.
But when the heat kicks in, the smiles can disappear!
I believe it.
I use a Tablespoon of Cocoa powder in mine.
Kind of like using cinnamon to give meat dishes Middle-Eastern flair.
