Scoop: FBI's Dan Bongino clashes with AG Bondi over handling of Epstein files
Axios ^ | July, 11 2025 | Marc Caputo

FBI deputy director Dan Bongino took a day off from work Friday after clashing at the White House with Attorney General Pam Bondi over their handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, four sources familiar with the conflict told Axios.

Why it matters: The dispute erupted Wednesday amid the fallout of the administration walking back its claims about Epstein by determining the convicted sex offender didn't have a celebrity "client list," and that he wasn't murdered in his New York City prison cell in 2019.

Bongino didn't come to work Friday, leading some insiders to believe he had quit. But administration officials say he's still on the job, even as the internal tension over the Epstein case continues.

Does this mean Bongino will resign and go back to talk radio?

It’s Axios so I don’t put too much stock in any of this.

But I do think the Epstein files are important.
And I do think the Trump Admin is handling this extremely poorly.

Whatever you do, keep your sacred honor Bongino! Even if it kills you!

The FBI already has no credibility left. If they tell you X happened about 60% say therefore it must be Y. Transparency is needed because no one trust them and yet it’s probably not possible to do the job well with too much transparency. It looks like spying on the Trump campaign has forever rendered the FBI trashed

Axios has provided more detail from what Loomer originally posted. Axios gets a lot of heat, they tilt left, but I find them to be relatively accurate. Blondi is a disaster, but Trump loves her, so I guess she stays. The messaging on this whole situation has been terrible. I hope someone figured that out on Team Trump.

The story could be totally fake—but regardless Bongino would be wise to find the exit door.

Imho this is about to get a lot worse...

Of the 3, Bongino is the only one I would trust. The “jury is out” on Kash ...just not sure about him ...Bondi has screwed this up from the gitgo by overpromising and waaay underdelivering ...she needs to go; but, who is confirmable to be her replacement???

I’d rather be remembered for standing up for what’s right than for ephemeral achievements or power I may have wielded.

Its not hard to imagine Bondi being largely responsible for the mess that this has become. She may be loyal but she’s not a strong executive by any stretch.

Two sources familiar with Bongino's position say he was increasingly displeased with Bondi's handling of the Epstein case because she had publicly overpromised and underdelivered disclosures about an Epstein "client list" that apparently never existed.

This makes some sense. It doesn't sound like Bongino is accusing Bondi of hiding/not disclosing information. He's apparently angry that her comments raised expectations that the evidence could not fulfill. That seems like a pretty reasonable point of view.

Bondi is fully responsible for the comments she made. If they were ill-chosen and subject to being interpreted in a way she didn't mean, that's her fault.

But I don't think she bears any responsibility for what is in and not in that trove of documents -- it's been in the hands of others for way too long.

That being said, I don't think you get rid of an AG because of a bad press conference.

“That being said, I don’t think you get rid of an AG because of a bad press conference.”

Especially when that AG is firmly behind your agenda and doing pretty good at it.

Some people are just not used to winning.

Others are just looking for attention and clicks.

Just to be clear—Bondi has had a series of horrible press interviews and press conferences (and other activities) where she wrote checks that bounced—starting back in February.

If you want to dig deeper into her horrid treatment of this case from the beginning to the present Megyn Kelly (first hour) goes there:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySFkI3Dh5QQ

Short version: Bondi make claims about the “most transparent administration ever” time after time. Then she ended the saga with a two page memo saying “nothing here, case closed”.

Regardless of the facts of the case Bondi has stomped on every rule of public relations. If she was a corporate executive she would be already gone—again not on policy—just on public relations debacles.

Well she’s not much better on her frequent gigs at Fox News either. Bondi seems more interested in keeping up appearances than anything else and is totally lacking in gravitas and purpose IMO.

Someone who manages something that becomes a shi! storm for their boss generally deserves to be fired.
