A study published in July 2024 investigated how often 1,425 people went number two, and compared those stats to their demographic, genetic, and health data.
Pooping too often or too rarely were both associated with different underlying health issues, while the healthiest participants reported pooping once or twice a day – a 'Goldilocks zone' of bowel movement frequency.
The study, led by a team from the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB), investigated the bathroom habits of people who were "generally healthy" – that is, with no history of kidney or gut issues like kidney disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or Crohn's disease.
These participants self-reported how often they dropped the kids off at the pool, and the researchers organized them into four categories: constipation for those reporting one or two bowel movements per week; low-normal for three to six movements per week; high-normal for one to three movements per day; and diarrhea for four or more watery stools per day.
The researchers also analyzed patients' blood metabolites and chemistry, their genetics, and the gut microbes present in their stool samples. The team then looked for possible associations between bowel movement frequency and these health markers, as well as other factors like their age and sex.
In general, those who reported less frequent bowel movements tended to be women, younger, and with a lower body mass index (BMI). But even accounting for these factors, people with constipation or diarrhea showed clear links to underlying health issues.
Bacteria usually found in the upper gastrointestinal tract were more common in stool samples from participants with diarrhea. Their blood samples, meanwhile, showed biomarkers associated with liver damage.
Stool samples from people with less frequent bowel movements had higher levels of bacteria associated with protein fermentation. This is a known hazard from constipation.

One solid Obama into the bowl each morning is best.
What a crappy assignment
And the job’s not over ‘til the paperwork is done.
An “Obama” a day keeps the doctor away.
I get really irritated when I am trying to watch a video on YouTube or Rumble, and some damned young woman screams out at me “STUCK POOP?”
WTF, why am I getting those?
D’uh
Hey, doc, I have a massive bowel movement every morning at about 7.
Well, that could be quite beneficial. What’s the problem?
The problem is I don’t get out of bed until 8!
How much money was spent to determine what we already knew?
LOL
As soon as you stop pooping and peeing everyday... You’ll have problems. Suggestion 1 - Cutback on your cheese intake.
I’m not going to get into the weeds on this except to state that doctors USED to ask such a question, re “regularity.” This bone has been grinding at me for quite some time.
‘Regularity’ is a prime indicator of endocrine and digestive health pertaining to ORGAN function (i.e., liver & pancreas among them, not just your damned intestines related to gluten and/or fat intake).
Don’t believe the BS labels associated with digestive problems and DO NOT self-treat by reading social media posts on gluten-free BS etc.
If your regularity changes dramatically, see a doctor. If the doctor doesn’t recommend radical lifestyle changes absent a dreaded diagnosis - OR hands you a scrip for any pill whatsoever - FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR (I recommend a Naturopath).
Ignoring digestive ‘hints’ your body provides by rationalizing or self-treating can be debilitating (as in losing organs or length of colon) or downright deadly.
(FReeper autodidacts such as myself will likely be nodding in agreement while others are sure to blast my comments due to biased experiences. So be it).
Don’t rationalize/ignore symptoms. Don’t trust MDs. Be healthy & smart. Or don’t. Free country/Free advice.
Just don’t expect me to pool for the healthcare of the reckless & stupid (like some with whom I’ve lived & worked).
There is always a nonsense sentence, unsupported by and fact or analysis of the underlying data. My ancestors have been eating cheese for thousands of years. And I'm not a cheese eating surrender monkey, thank you very much.
I’m here all week!
;^)
Another Uranus article?
You might want to rethink your comment to this title......
“WTF, why am I getting those?”
Hmmm...
1. Why are you getting those ads?
Or...
2. Why is your poop stuck?
Never encountered a cheese problem and I devour lots of it.
I find the problems occur when I am dehydrated. About 10 years ago I was moving from one residence to another. It was a hot day and I was sweating. A lot. I thought I was getting plenty of liquid but was not enough.
Next morning it took nearly and hour to drop the kids off at the pool. The bastards wouldn’t get out of the vehicle!
“I’m here all week!”
Probably not something to say on a thread about poop schedule......
