Two large California oil refineries are shutting down, triggering mounting concerns from state legislators, industry groups and many others.
**snip**
The Phillips 66 and Valero’s Benicia sites are set to close in 2026. Together, the shutdowns will eliminate nearly 300,000 barrels-per‑day of refining capacity — roughly 20% of the total used in the state.
Valero attributed its decision to “years of regulatory pressure (and) significant fines for air quality violations,” including an $82 million penalty levied in 2024. Phillips 66 similarly cited business challenges stemming from California’s strict environmental regulations.
"They have said that they cannot do business in the state of California," Gipson reiterated. “The regulatory agencies have imposed on the refiners of California very stringent regulation that makes it very difficult for them to remain in the state of California.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.
LA/Orange County now: $4.64.
Expect the nationalization arguement to happen in California.
Hmm, do I feel schadenfreude coming on?
Idiots keep voting for the politicians who keep making doing business in CA more and more difficult and costly, all in the name of “the environment.”
Meanwhile, those same politicians have had a hands-off attitude towards fighting homelessness and drug addiction, a situation which has allowed the formerly amazing BART system to become a filthy cesspool better avoided.
So, Californians who cannot afford to drive because of gas prices and must take the filthy public transit systems will pay the price for stupid voting.
I can’t say I have much sympathy for them.

It would sure be a shame if one couldn’t buy gasoline, guns, or ammo in CA.
I thought they already couldn’t do so.
The dems turned California into a cash-cow by duplicating every layer of federal bureaucracy and attaching a hefty ‘service fee’. As a result you can’t (legally) pour a slab of concrete without notifying every state agency of your intentions. Big Brother on steroids, high cost of everything, and hard to make ends meet even in ‘good’ times unless you’re on the inside track.
The people of California are getting exactly what they deserve.
Things lot to change! Make California Golden again! Vote out the idiots.
Three cheers for Valero and Phillips66! From a Valero shareholder and Texan.
California has gas prices and income taxes that mirror Mexico’s. Makes the illegal invaders feel right at home.
Here in Rome, NY, regular gas has hung at $3.27 for a couple of months now. I had a Doctor’s appointment this afternoon in Utica, which is a half-hour away. Went to B.J.’s Wholesale Club, which I’m a member of, and gas was $2.98.
I filled up my Ram 1500 today for $2.38 a gallon at Walmart in Harker Heights, Texas, 25 gallons = $59.50. In Californina the average price today was $4.66 a gallon. In California that would be $116.50 dollars a difference of $58.00 bucks. That really sucks if you are living in California. In Texas I can drive my Ram 1500 390 Horsepower pickup for what a midsize Chevy, Honda or Ford would cost to drive. Do not even mention to me the cost of driving electric vehicles unless you factor in the cost of a battery pack replacement, see below from Google:
Examples of Battery Replacement Costs (estimates):
Hyundai: $38,000 - $45,000 (or $50,000 - $60,000 CAD)
Kia EV6: $33,000 US or $45,000 CAD
Ford F-150 Lightning: $34,000 - $45,000 US
Mustang Mach-E: $35,000 US
Tesla Model 3: Around $16,000 plus labor
Volkswagen ID.4: $15,000 - $20,000 US
Nissan Leaf: $12,000 US
Chevrolet Bolt: Around $12,000 US
BMW i3: Around $13,500 US
Basically when your battery pack hits 100,000 miles and end of warranty your vehicle is worth only its scrap metal.
Oddly I do see a place for electric vehicles for short range commutes to work of less than 100 mile range. These could be recharged nightly for commuting or for us retired to the local grocery store. It must have enough battery power to run air conditioning and a heater for the 100 mile total commute. It gets hot in Texas and cold, we need both.
However, if I want to drive from my home in Salado, Texas to my family back in El-Paso, Texas I would stop in Fort Stockton and fill up my Truck once only in 5 minutes. If I were in an EV it would be two stops and 30 minutes to an hour depending on the EV Charging station capacity. I do not accept this.
Note to Californians that are conservative, you are welcome in Texas, but not so much liberal. In fact liberals just stay the hell away from us.
Too bad this will NOT only affect Kalifornicate’ya.
Move the refineries to Nevada and Arizona.
3 bucks by us.
I’ve been on plenty of pours, and don’t remember having to axe “permission”...
Yeah, it’s hanging around the same price here.
