The Phillips 66 and Valero’s Benicia sites are set to close in 2026. Together, the shutdowns will eliminate nearly 300,000 barrels-per‑day of refining capacity — roughly 20% of the total used in the state.

Making life miserable for the white middle class in California is a long term tactic of the “Reconquesta”.
California: (aims gun at foot, fires)
Also California: “Ow, that hurt! It’s those evil Republicans again!”

“Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson of the Gardena district”
I wonder to which party Mike belongs? I guess it’s not relevant to the story...
Republic CEO Bob Hendrickson cited “rising operational costs, industry headwinds, and supplier changes as reasons for the move,” per the Chronicle.
Socialism is taking its toll on California.
I mean, as far as I know there is still oil offshore with wells already drilled and capped off by gov't regulations.
Nearby are the refineries, all built and ready to produce if the state would just let them.
Something to think about while you're walking, isn't it?
That refinery is NOT near Los Angeles. It is in a suburb of LA County, but not near the city. How do I know? I grew up in Gardena and spent my teen years until I left. Why can’t the media get even the most simple facts correct?
Forgot to mention I remember that refinery. I think it’s off of Vermont Ave. or some other close big street. Not going to Google. Plus, I always thought that suburb was Torrance, not Gardena.
Of course the regulations are not justified.
Here deep behind enemy lines I recently saw a PSA for some group “seeking to hold oil companies is accountable.” I assume another effort to sue for allegedly causing global warming. It a PSA related to that? Why?
Oil is used to make plastics for everything thing they drive, wear and use... who is going to tell them that?
California drivers already pay the highest gas prices in the nation — around $4.85 per gallon, significantly greater than the $3.16 national average.
Yikes. I paid $2.54 per gallon Friday in Charlotte, NC.
“Are the state’s strong regulations worth the cost?”
Of course...if they can save just one [fill in the blank] then it’s worth the cost./s
They’re getting what they voted for - not my concern.
The stupid should burn when lunatics are running the asylum.
I grew up in So. Cal, I used to ride or drive by the Torrance refinery, and because of family and regular visits drove by the Vallejo Refinery.
I left California permanently in 1979 because I could see the damage the east coast eco-nuts were doing to a beautiful state. Democrats killed my California.
Looks like the Refineries I grew up with have finally figured it out.
Every time I return to CA, I’m amazed at just how much they have Fuc$ed up that state. When I was growing up CA was at then height of its pollution. Today it is a far bigger cesspool, run by delusional Democrats that are going to save you from your own bad decisions, by forcing you to accept theirs.
I think that is called Tyranny.
Enjoy your own version of “Metropolis”.
Good. Californians voted overwhelmingly for this. So they deserve to get it good and hard.
Sorry, Jim. That’s just the way I see it. Get out of California while you can.
