.....Before I became a parent, I thought I’d raise my children with the same firmness that my West Indian teachers used at the small Episcopalian elementary school I attended in Brooklyn, N.Y. They were quick to discipline and had high expectations for us. I figured being strict would help prepare Black children for a world that rarely sees them as innocent — but that was before I became a mother, feeling the heavy responsibility of raising Black boys.
The effects of racism aren’t just for the history books. Black Americans carry the weight of discrimination and injustice from those before us, determined not to pass that trauma on to our children. No matter how hard I try, being their parent often feels like a tough balancing act. I feel caught between protecting them from the harsh realities of life in this country and giving them the opportunities to make mistakes and learn.
As a mother, physician and health equity advocate, I have seen how our health care system affects Black children, who often face longer wait times in emergency rooms, higher chances of being diagnosed incorrectly and a greater risk of not surviving through their first year of life. These health outcomes are connected to wider issues, including education.
For example, a report from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation found that Black boys face systemic bias in schools. Misunderstandings about their behavior in preschool can lead to harsh punishments, robbing them of their chance to learn and play. By middle school, harmful stereotypes can lead to them being excluded from gifted programs, hurting their confidence and interest in school. The Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling on affirmative action in college admissions will likely limit opportunities for Black students in fields such as medicine and law.

How about discipling your kids to act like civilized human beings and throwing a father in the picture to boot?
Mature, responsible black men are what’s going to be needed to fix black culture’s problems.
Huge bullshit article. UNAmerican.
I over 75 years of age. I suffer discrimination for many services , including medical. That’s because I am old.I simply educated myself on what to do.Veterans also have the problem.
Look, these idjits want a hand out. Not a hand up.
Black boys are discriminated against...that’s why they receive the majority of athletic scholarships offered in America. If I was of their sleezy mind I would be screeching that White boys are discriminated against.
I recently saw a short YouTube video of a white woman talking about why Martin Luther King was right. Character matters. Color of your skin does not. We need a color-blind society. The people who obsess over racism are the racists. Just treat people based on their individual merits and don’t judge people by their group.
I saw the video, and I thought: “This makes sense.”
100% of the comments were basically — “I guess we know who this stupid bitch voted for!” and “What a racist! She doesn’t even see how privileged she is!” and “Only a racist believes in a color-blind society!” and “If you see me only as an individual and not a member of my group then you refuse to see me for who I am!”
Seems hopeless sometimes.
“...feeling the heavy responsibility of raising Black boys.”
She starts off with that and never lets up. Would not want her as my doctor. She must have attended that medical college that does not, according to Thomas Sowell, fail black medical students for any reason, no matter how incompetent they are. DEI in action.
“Black Americans carry the weight of discrimination and injustice from those before us, determined not to pass that trauma on to our children.”
Hasn’t been a slave in this country for 165 years and blacks were doing great and getting better until LBJ started their decline, the dims just keep it going.
“Misunderstandings about their behavior in preschool can lead to harsh punishments”
Unfortunately, the “misunderstandings” are likely that the black child is objectively violent, for example physically striking another child or a teacher. I doubt the incarceration rate of blacks is 4 times that of whites because of “misunderstandings”. Someone should figure out the basis for the violent behavior and change it instead of excusing it.
I’ve become friends with some of the guys at my employers warehouse. All black men.
One is sort of the elder statesman of the warehouse. I’ve seen him pull younger ones aside and give them some fatherly wisdom. As an elder statesman should do.
The other day I found out that a couple of them have set up a neighborhood basketball day once a week at a church. Four black men pay for the rental and don’t tell the others.
He told me their goal is to show and teach young black men how to be men. The other day one got all mad because another fouled him. He didn’t like being dissed.
My friend pulled him aside and first told him in no uncertain terms the bodily damage that would occur if he tried anything.
Then he calmed the kid down and asked him just what he would do after killing the guy for fouling him. He told him about the police cameras and all the Ring cameras in every direction. How he has absolutely no chance at freedom after doing violence and that’s not how men are to act.
The whole conversation gave me new respect for my friend. Black men don’t need excuses. They need mentors.
Oh for God’s sake. Physician, heal thyself!
Yeah the color blind Theory only works if people share the same values which they don’t so we’ll never have it
Why doesn’t she go live in a predominant black country, you know like Haiti. This way she won’t receive any racism and can live in utopia.
“For example, a report from the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation found that Black boys face systemic bias in schools.” No sweat, today is Kwanza...or is it Juneteenth, just for the black boys?
Agreed......and the issue of aggression you describe is because of single parent households. That dynamic applies to white boys and black boys.
Little consistent discipline inside of the family results in such aggression.
The majority of black women become single parents. That’s the real problem.
Since the beginning of time one has despised the other. Now, the forced integration experiment of two historically opposed cultures has obviously failed.
I met with one yesterday from the old country and a lovely individual. She had no chip on her shoulder and was angry so many here just have no desire to work hard and build a family.
Then her and I made love. It was absolutely beautiful!!
“My friend pulled him aside and first told him in no uncertain terms the bodily damage that would occur if he tried anything.”
This guy is going to mentor these young black men away from violence by threatening to do more violence to them than they will do to someone else. Excellent strategy. Just curious, how many times have you and your new black friend been to each other’s house for dinner?
The start of the article, where she gave her son the $$ for ice (cream?) every time he nagged her for it, made me think that she was already failing as a part.

Once again, they are blaming their failures on Whitey.
“[I hate not being able to edit comments]”
I wonder what it would take to enable the editing feature?
Seems like the author is crying discrimination when they should be talking about both poor choices and poor decision making.
