June 5, 1967 was a day that will live in glory in the annals of Jewish history. On that day in 1967, the Israeli air force destroyed on the ground and in the air the Arab air forces, and gained full supremacy in the air, and ultimately on the ground and at sea. This was the Six Day War—52 years ago. It was one of the greatest victories in Jewish history, and a seminal event in Israel’s history.
It all began a month earlier. The Egyptian dictator Gamal Abdel Nasser made bellicose statements on the Voice of the Arabs radio station, including the threat of drowning the Jews in the Mediterranean Sea. It was not only verbal threats coming out of Nasser’s and his underlings’ mouths, it was the actions he took, including the closing of the Straits of Tiran to Israeli navigation, making Israeli trade from Eilat to Asia and the Far East nearly impossible. The vital shipment of oil to Israel came through the Straits to Eilat.
On May 23, 1967, Nasser, addressing Egyptian pilots in the Sinai, announced the blockade of the Straits. He stated, “The Gulf of Aqaba constitutes our Egyptian territorial waters…under no circumstances will we allow the Israeli flag to pass through…”
Earlier, on May 21, 1967, Egyptian troops occupied Sharm el-Sheikh, and two days earlier the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) contingent, based in the Sinai, was ousted by Nasser, in contravention of the decade-long armistice agreement following the 1956-57 Sinai Campaign, in which Israeli forces reached the Suez Canal and captured the Sinai Peninsula. Under pressure from the U.S. and western powers, Israel withdrew from the Sinai.
Our relatively small air force of 200 serviceable jet fighters, including Fouga-Magister training planes, converted to serve as ground support and bombing operations, faced a huge Arab air force about four times its size.
Israel’s French made Mirage III and Super Mystere interceptors, Vatours and Ouragan bombers were able to destroy 391 enemy planes on the ground, and an additional 60 planes in dogfights.
Israel lost 19 planes. The Egyptian runways were also destroyed, which prevented their aircraft from taking off. Israel was left with 12 interceptors to defend the country. At 7:45 a.m.,
Back on Israel’s home front, cars and public transportation buses were requisitioned by the IDF, and factories were closed because all able-bodied workers were mobilized.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
“The Six Day War: The miracle in the air and on the ground”
It definitely was a miracle, and they should have stayed with what worked. Instead they then elected a WOMAN who nearly got them, and us for that matter, wiped off the map in 1973.
They never made that mistake again.
The war in which Israel attacked the US Liberty for over an hour, despite a large American flag flying, and killing 34 American service men.
Not the best of “miracles.”
Congratulations, you have a reason for also opposing Israel. Iran and militant Islams thanks you,
“The war in which Israel attacked the US Liberty...”
That was by design. Liberty was an intelligence gathering vessel.
The continuous existence of the Jews after 1000s of years wandering in exile; the continued existence of Israel after being vastly outnumbered and routinely attacked by their neighbors; the irrational hatred of the Jews: these things are evidence that the Jews are indeed God’s chosen people and that the Bible is true.
The United States, under anti-Semite Lyndon Johnson, was a putative ally of Israel at best.
LBJ an anti-Semite?
Wow, that accusation is used with the most reckless abandon.
Do some internet searches. Jewish sources claim that LBJ had Jewish heritage and was proud of it. And that he was a great friend of Israel.
The below articles are all from Jewish writers, Jewish publications:
Friend, ally, savior: Revealing LBJ’s Jewish ties.
Lyndon Johnson: Israel Has Had No Better Friend.
Lyndon Johnson: No better friend.
How LJ forged the alliance is one article you picked. You will note that it conveniently begins just as the Six Day War begins. The US did nothing either to prevent that war or assist Israel in fighting it. Lyndon Johnson supported Israel because it won. Had it lost he would have continued to ignore the state of Israel.
And you know this ... how?
You claim LBJ was an anti-Semite, yet you offer no evidence.
I was 13 years old in 1967.
I recall how the US media was behind that plucky little state of Israel that stared down and beat the cr@p out of several Soviet Union supported muslim countries.
was any of the munitions used by our great ally Israel to attack the USS Liberty provided by the U.S.?
The secret ingredient: it was a sneak attack.
Golda Meir was Prime Minister in 1967 as well as in 1973.
Lyndon Johnson was very pro-Israel and changed US policy from a more neutral one to a more pro-Israel one.
I think they were using French Mirages for strafing runs.
