President Trump has returned from the Middle East to mounting questions about whether it’s appropriate for him to accept a luxury Qatari jet to serve as the next Air Force One, including from Republicans increasingly dubious that the move is a smart and worthwhile idea.
Republicans have given the president a wide berth on a multitude of issues throughout his first four months in office as they push to enact his agenda. However, very few are rushing to his defense after he made clear he plans to accept the $400 million gift.
“It’s an unnecessary distraction,” one Senate Republican told The Hill about the GOP conference’s mood about the potential transaction.
Many Republicans believe the gift will not really be free given how long it will take to make the plane safe and secure enough to fly. That will also take a lot of time, leaving some Republicans saying Trump might be lucky to even fly on the plane at all before his term is over.
“This is like a combination of ‘Fixer Upper’ and ‘Pimp My Ride,’” the source said. “It’s going to cost a lot of money.”

That is far more serious then this airplane that Qatar wants to gift to the U.S., Rand.
> This is all about Trump trolling Boeing. <
There’s a lot of folks huffing and puffing about this issue (that includes me). I never considered what you said there. It all could be part of Trump’s plan to light a fire under Boeing’s feet.
👍🏻
As I understand it, there are only 2 VC-25 aircraft that we call Air Force One. These aircraft are 35 years old. Having a second backup would probably be a good idea since Boeing seems inept in getting the new ones off the line.
On schedule, the Leftist “The Hill” parrots the left stream media democrat talking points.
Touché.
Criticizing President Trump and voting with the RATS. That's his latest activity.
I thought the USAF had a high tech plane that could serve the President, the 747 E4 “Nightwatch”
And, the “nightwatch” can re-fuel in air
See tagline. Hint, it’s a paraphrase from Shakespeare.
It would be interesting to hear from someone closer to the
Real issue.
The problem is not the air frame, the problem is all the contractors and vendors modifying that air frame to AF1
standards and capabilities.
They are not performing per contract.
Don’t blame Boeing, blame, the Government.
The current Air Force One is totally inadequate for the current reality of presidential transportation.
Especially given the history of assassination attempts on President Trump and the number of Stinger missiles that have went missing in Ukraine..
Lots of people would like to see this guy dead and Trump is taking his life in his hands every time he flies in the old AF1

Hey RandFan, knock the crap off. Anyone who follows politics closely knows that The Hill is not worth a buck of spit. Why pollute FR?
Rand Paul is against everything. He’s acting like he’s the GOPe designated McCain stand in this time around.
I have begun to doubt Rand Paul’s independence streak. He seems to want to detonate the GOP agenda.
What was the plan?
Send the Statue of Liberty back to France. They have asked for it back, I think. Dems must play by all rules.
Yeah, chop it up into little medallions and attach them to all the American soldier’s graves in France.
If Boeing got off it’s lazy ass none if this would be an issue time to find another contractor ASAP.
AF1 is 30 years old
