Robert De Niro attacks Trump in Cannes speech: ‘This isn’t just America’s problem’

The actor Robert De Niro has – after a brief period of abstention – returned to his robust public critique of Donald Trump, using his Palme d’Or acceptance speech at the Cannes film festival to newly attack the US president.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the 78th film festival in France, De Niro said that the US’s re-elected commander-in-chief posed a global threat.

“In my country, we are fighting like hell for the democracy we once took for granted,” he said. “That affects all of us here, because art is the crucible that brings people together, like tonight. Art looks for truth. Art embraces diversity. That’s why art is a threat.”

As applause broke out in the Grand Lumiére, Cannes’ largest cinema, De Niro continued:

“That’s why we are a threat to autocrats and fascists. America’s philistine president ha[s] had himself appointed head of one of our premier cultural institutions [the Kennedy Center]. He has cut funding and support to the arts, humanities and education.”

De Niro then addressed Trump’s surprise announcement 10 days ago that he planned to put a 100% tariff on films made outside the US.

“You can’t put a price on creativity,” said De Niro, “but apparently you can put a tariff on it. Of course, this is unacceptable. All of these attacks are unacceptable. And this isn’t just an American problem, it’s a global one. Like a film, we can’t just all sit back and watch. We have to act, and we have to act now.”

De Niro concluded his speech with a rallying call for people to take action, “without violence, but with great passion and determination”.

He means unlike a film.... or we can't just all sit back and watch.

Otherwise it means the audience throws rotten fruit at the Disney and other woke movies on the screen while booing.

Actually audiences often cheered during the shooting of thugs by Charles Bronson in Death Wish movies.

And I personally witnessed the theater members gasping and then giggling when the Goldfinger character played by Honor Blackman was introduced or referenced. December, 1964.

Today moviegoers would have heard lots more on the way to the theater from nearby drivers with loud rap songs on stereos.

I see the dude’s major malfunction right away in that photo. His neck tie length should be at his belt buckle. Maybe Bobby doesn’t know to tie a windsor knot.

They truly are lunatics. And they have zero intention to protect “democracy”.

He is an actor... The ancient Romans felt actors were almost on the same social level as street prostitutes.

Robert Heinlein:

“[T]here seems to have been an actual decline in rational thinking. The United States had become a place where entertainers and professional athletes were mistaken for people of importance. They were idolized and treated as leaders; their opinions were sought on everything and they took themselves just as seriously—after all, if an athlete is paid a million or more a year, he knows he is important ... so his opinions of foreign affairs and domestic policies must be important, too, even though he proves himself to be ignorant and sub-literate every time he opens his mouth.”

Bobby would really paint the air blue with free profanity, if he took one mis-step and twisted his ankle in those sky-high platform shoes. He would probably make the director fire any of the camera crew who laughed at him. Like something Kim Jung Un would do.

**Meanwhile, I never noticed just how pigeon-toed Al Pacino is! Or maybe standing like that was just a part of the script.

Deniro is upset he’s having a hard time finding kids since the DOJ is bird-dogging the child traffickers.

Lol.. I never even noticed Al’s feet.. I wonder if it is to secretly make fun of jerkwad Deniro.

BTW, some of the funniest things I saw in Japan was watching the girls (usually between 15-25 years old) going through the platform shoes phase..
When they started falling, I swear it looked like slow motion.. like a 5 foot 2x4 board falling (arms flapping).
Not sure if it’s still a ‘thang’ or not though.

Well, at least DeNiro is anti-Philistine(Palestinian). That has to count for something.
