WOW. I missed this site. Gotta check it out.
Thanks for posting!!!
It is amazing how little you can get a very capable PC for.
I go back to the days when, for a couple decades, the machine you really wanted was about $3k.
Tell me about it.
3K for my 1st PC - 286 processor. Had to pay another couple of hundred for the 287 co-processor.
8088 here. Original IBM PC, and only got that good of a price due to a student discount plan and aftermarket components (drives, RAM, multifunction board).
Financed it like a car with my credit union, IIRC 36 months. Might have been 30. Was a good decision.
I used to build PCs from components in the late 80s and early 90s from the Jameco catalog. I still recall buying a 40MB harddrive for $465.50 which was about a half months grad school teaching assistantship stipend.

Yes, I have thrown out PCs that cost many hundreds of dollars years ago. But prices will go up significantly if tariffs stay as they are. US much traded its industrial base.
Yup.
In the US, Computer. Shopper used to be an 1.5 tome, delivered momthly.
Interesting site...
first thing that stands out, I think this is great and shows comprehensiveness... looks like one can still build a Win7 system!
(I’m typing this on Win7 desktop)
Thank God for what we can use for good and God.
Bring back the Gateway 2000 cows!
Leading Edge Model M with the speedy 7 MHz 8088. 50% faster CPU than the original IBM PC.
Yes, that should be fast. Unless/before Divine judgment devastates the West, which will come, I foresee being able to build your own EV (presuming one of the monthly "battery breakthroughs" actually provides the needed breakthrough) using a compatibility site like https://pcpartpicker.com/list.
Since there is no exhaust system, nor radiator cooling, nor oil lubrication (remove those from your ICE vehicle and see the room you have), then the major large and or heavy components would be the frame, body, suspension, batteries and motors and seats. You would pick the size and frame type, and the EVpartpicker would show which parts are compatible with it, including specs such as torque and hp and "operating system."
The type of body might even be custom built to fit the frame and components.
You would buy these thru the partpicker, and send them to a local contract builder, whom you only have to pay labor for.
As you build it, an insurance company could rate them as concerns safety and repair costs.
These somewhat custom vehicles inspected and licensed according to standards.
These would be modular units, using replacement parts that are available, and more easily replaced.
It seems Jeff Bezos has this idea as well.

My Gawd you are old!!
Prices will go up far more now that M$ is insisting on the TPP chip on all motherboards in order to load Win11. This will make all present PC’s unusable as soon as they roll out the update.
I wonder who has bought stock in MBoard makers.
No kidding. Started building PCs in '85.
I remember replacing people's 10MB HD with a 30MB and telling them, "You will never need another hard drive".
