A major discovery in South America has thrust the Filo del Sol project into the spotlight. The Vicuña joint venture, formed by Lundin Mining and BHP, recently announced what is believed to be the largest greenfield copper find in the past three decades. This new find significantly boosts the project’s position, placing it among the world’s top ten copper resources.

A New Copper Giant in South America

According to Mining Technology, the Filo del Sol and Josemaria deposits are now home to an estimated 13 million tonnes of copper, classified as measured and indicated (M&I) resources, with an additional 25 million tonnes classified as inferred.

This discovery is regarded as one of the largest in the industry, adding to the growing importance of South America in global mining. Along with copper, the deposits contain substantial quantities of gold and silver—32 million ounces of gold and 659 million ounces of silver, all categorized as M&I resources.

The high-grade core of the Filo del Sol deposit has proven to be a particularly rich source. It contains 4.5 million tonnes of copper, 9.6 million ounces of gold, and 259 million ounces of silver. These figures demonstrate the exceptional value of the resources found at Filo del Sol.

The Expanding Potential of Filo del Sol

Drilling operations at the site have not yet reached the limits of mineralization, leaving plenty of room for future expansion. The resource is spread across a vast 10-square-kilometer area, with a strike length of 6.5 kilometers and a width of 1.5 kilometers. The potential for more significant finds continues to grow as drilling progresses, with some of the mineralization already extending beyond the current resource pit shell.

The discovery also marks a significant increase for Lundin Mining, with a 29% rise in measured and indicated copper mineral resources and a staggering 650% increase in inferred copper resources. This growth signals a shift in the potential of the project, highlighting the Filo del Sol deposits as one of the most promising copper resources in the world.

Plans for the Future of Filo del Sol

Lundin Mining’s president and CEO, Jack Lundin, has expressed excitement over the project’s potential, calling Filo del Sol one of the most significant greenfield discoveries of the last 30 years. The initial mineral resource estimate serves as a critical milestone for the project, with an integrated technical report on the combined project expected in the first quarter of 2026.

This report will further outline plans for development and continued exploration at the site, positioning Filo del Sol for a future as one of the world’s leading copper and precious metals operations.

In March 2025, Lundin Mining also entered into an exclusivity agreement with Talon Metals to negotiate an earn-in agreement, which could see Lundin acquire up to 70% of the Boulderdash and Roland nickel-copper exploration properties. This development adds to Lundin’s growing portfolio in South America, further securing its place in the global mining sector.

Why couldn’t the stupid “journalist” use the word “Argentina” instead of “South America”?

The reporter wouldn’t want to add any gold stars to Javier’s resume.

Poorly written article. Though it may be purposely vague for political reasons, I guess.

Yes, There is NO mining in Resolution, yet.
Trump 45 got them go ahead, but Biden stopped it right away.
Interestingly, most greenees actually approved the project as they promised all kind of donations.
But, as always in these cases, some Indians decided this to be their holly ground!

Doesn’t Argentina has a new conservative leader now? IIRC, their inflation is down substantially, and size of government has been reduced. That explains MSM will not mention the country.

The goofy journalist can’t mention the country because he hates Javier Milei.

Well, at least the writer provides some information about the resource classifications of measured, indicated, and inferred, rather than just referring to the entire resource as “reserves”.

Have they narrowed it down to any particular country in South America?

I was thinking the same thing...what an odd thing to leave out and simply refer to it as "a mine in South America."

After doing a little more research, I found it to be located in Chile.

Don’t stop there! Require companies coming in to invest in refining and wire making, etc so you send out semi-finished and finished product. Learn from Africa’s mistake and US success.

Most people don’t know that the copper mine in Salt Lake County also yields a substantial amount of gold.

This new find will further strengthen Milei’s Argentine renewal.
