In a nutshell:
Left-handed and mixed-handed people appear significantly more often in certain mental and neurodevelopmental disorders like autism and schizophrenia, with mixed-handedness showing the strongest association.
Three factors predict higher rates of unusual handedness: neurodevelopmental conditions, disorders with early onset, and conditions affecting language function.
Not all mental health conditions show this pattern—depression, dyscalculia, and pedophilia showed no significant differences in handedness compared to the general population.
Left-handed people appear significantly more often among those with certain mental and neurodevelopmental disorders, according to groundbreaking research that analyzed data from over 200,000 individuals. This connection potentially offers a window into how our brains develop and organize themselves.
The study, published in Psychological Bulletin, revealed that conditions like schizophrenia, autism, and intellectual disability show notably higher rates of left-handedness compared to the general population. While about 10% of people worldwide are left-handed, autism cases were 3.5 times more likely to exhibit non-right-handedness than control groups.
Even conditions like dyslexia and stuttering showed significantly higher rates of left-handedness.
“Language, like handedness, has a very one-sided location in the brain, so it stands to reason that the development of both and their disorders could be linked,” says lead researcher Julian Packheiser from Ruhr University Bochum, in a statement.
By combining data from ten previous meta-analyses, representing 402 datasets, researchers identified patterns across different diagnoses that had previously remained hidden when studying disorders in isolation.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
I would have thought schizophrenia is more common in ambidextrous people.
Lefties are weird.
I think they are actually space aliens in disguise.
Well then...I’m f*****!
To her 84 year dying day, my mother apologized to people because I am left handed.
For a Leftie, the handicap of living in a right-handed world induces growth that yields superiority
I am left handed too....and so am I..
This is pure prejudice. A left handed man can’t get no justice in this world. Down with righty, down with righty.
I was glad, though, that in my life time they finally made decent left handed golf clubs...
Another left-handed freeper here.
Maybe that’s why I don’t care to put up with RAT/commie BS.
FAFO.....
Sounds sinister.
I saw that!
Help! Help! I'm being OPPRESSED!
I am left-handed. It has defined me since I was a young child. I’ve had to overcome great difficulties living in a right handed world. That this has caused my left-handed brothers and sisters to suffer is no wonder. There’s only one way to fix this. Reparations.
There's something sinister about that.
I purposely left it there.
One of my adopted children is left handed now.
She did not pick her dominant hand until she was five or six.
She still occasionally switches
She is schizoaffective, with some autism traits and thinks of herself as a man.
My dad and late husband used to tell me the same thing. Not only am I left-handed (mostly ambidextrous), but I am also a redheaded female. They both said I should qualify as handicapped. LOL Both said I would have been burned as a witch in the 1700 and early 1800's. 😁
I write and eat with my left hand but do everything else with my right hand. I can eat with my right hand but left is more natural.
No, I don't have the above mentioned mental issues.
Or PTSD ? There is a large list of mental abnormalities and atypical handedness. Schizophrenia I believe has been associated with leftness.
Left-handed people are the only ones in their right mind.
I agree. As a lefty, I’ve spent my life trying to get those damned scissors to work. It’s enough to drive you crazy.
(And the cuffs of my shirts used to have ink stains because I dragged them across the writing instead of in front of it.)
