New research is bad news for vegans — even if you eat plant-based protein

Hold the tofu.

New research suggests that vegans may be more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies than their meat-eating

Worse still, scientists found that even vegans who hit their daily protein goals with plant-based sources often fall short on two essential amino acids, putting their health at risk.

In the US, an estimated 1% to 5% of the population follows a vegan diet, which eliminates all animal products, including meat, dairy and eggs.

Over the years, researchers have found that following a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers, as well as help with weight management.

In fact, one study found that eating a vegan diet can improve your health in just four weeks.

But meat-eaters have long argued that animal products provide essential nutrients — particularly proteins, vitamins and minerals — that are tough to get in sufficient quantities from a plant-based diet.

A new six-month study out of Australia might just support that claim.

Researchers tracked the diets of 240 adults, aged 30 to 75, ranging from strict vegans and dairy-eating vegetarians to good old-fashioned meat lovers.

“ I haven’t eaten meat in 35 years, ”

My condolences .
You don’t get the pleasure of a ribeye steak from the grill.
Nor a tender succulent prime rib cooked to perfection .
Or pulled pork smoked with hickory smoke on a beautiful spring day .

I hope your sentence is commuted soon so you can have freedom again.

People who follow a Judeo-Christian religion path can find dietary guidance in their Scriptures, the Bible.

According to the Bible, the initial diet God made for mankind is found in Genesis 1:29-30.
And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.   Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so.
Later, God permitted them to eat some meats, but divided them according to "clean" meats, which they were permitted to eat, and "unclean" meats, which they were not permitted to eat.   (This is all spelled out in Leviticus 11, and Deuteronomy 14.)   The "unclean" category of meats includes pigs, although many Christians today do eat pig meat freely (such as pork chops, bacon, baked ham, pulled pork, pork & beans, etc.).

As it turns out, though, God may have been on to something there.   It is now known that pigs eat their own poop.   Thus, people who eat those "unclean" pigs are actually eating processed poop.

WHEN did God lift the restriction on flesh? Was it not after the Flood when there were NO living plants on earth? Also note the life span of man reduced dramatically after the Flood as well. Food for thought.

Did Jesus clearly eat pork? Did the Disciples clearly eat pork? Or did they follow the clean and unclean guidelines in the OT? Give us a very clear answer.

I’m near Carnivore, certainly “Keto” and rarely eat any veggies or fruit. But many plants WANT you to eat them - to some degree. Many have seeds that need partial digestion and being pooped out to germinate. Hence “fruit” that is colorful and sweet!

And since animals walk, they also can disperse the seeds.

https://blog.nature.org/2017/05/10/what-happens-when-you-plant-pile-bear-scat/

“In many arid and semiarid grasslands and savannas worldwide, the consumption and subsequent defecation of viable seeds of woody species by livestock (i.e., endozoochory) are partially responsible for the increased distribution and density of woody plants...Passage through the cattle digestive system separates seeds from pods, scarifies the seed coat, and enhances germination of surviving seed (Campos and Ojeda, 1997, Peinetti et al., 1993). A greater percentage of seeds remain viable after passing through cattle than through sheep or goats (Kneuper et al., 2003). Mesquite seedlings readily establish from seeds that are in cattle dung pats...”

“Processed meat is especially unhealthy.”

“Highly Processed Meat Danger? It’s not what you think...
KenDBerryMD”:

“...but there’s this weird thing that we’re seeing in the carnivore Community where literally tens of thousands of people are using highly processed Meats to improve their health and so when you highly process in other words you take a lot of cuts of meat and you grind them up and you add some spices and some salt maybe you cure that meat with nitrates you still have a healthy food product...”

I see.Let's read in context, shall we?
#1 Who is the target audience? Chpt. 7:1 tells us Pharisees, scribes and priests. Not the usual rabble but learned men.
#2. What's their beef? verse 2 tells us disciples were eating with "unwashed" hands. The ritual washings which the priests demanded were a man made rule. Verses 7,8 and 9 go farther into this.
#3 The problem was not what kind of food they were eating but the manner in which it was eaten
IF Jesus had declared unclean foods to be okay, He would have been stoned immediately. That didn't happen. This was a skirmish over hand washing in a particular way and nothing more.

IF Jesus had declared the distinction of clean and unclean foods were over, Peter would not have reacted the way he did in Acts 10:9 - 18, Acts 11:5 - 18 where Peter had to overcome his phobia of Gentiles as an unclean race to dismiss as unclean. Peter well understood not to eat unclean foods as did all Jews.

Lastly remember the reason we all die? Lust for an apple in the Garden of Eden. We have to control our appetites for only clean things. God has rules.

Bob , not really sure why this is a discussion topic if you are a non Jew.

We all know that Jesus freed His followers from the Old Testament food laws in Leviticus .
That’s not even an issue for a Christian.

"Mark 7:18. "And he said to them, 'Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,'"

Do you think Jesus was saying there that what you eat can not possibly be unhealthy for you?   (I don't think so.   I would refer you to BipolarBob's post #89.)

Here's some other quick examples that would make Jesus a liar, if that was truly what He meant.
Does God (of both the Old Testament and the New Testament) think that if a drunkard drinks a half-gallon of cheap whiskey from outside, that will not be unhealthy for him?

Does God think that if a person ingests a spoonful of arsenic from outside, that will not be "unhealthy" for him?

Does God think that if a person ingests a spoonful of tetrodotoxin from outside, that will not be "unhealthy" for him?

Does God think that if a person ingests a spoonful of cyanide from outside, that will not be "unhealthy" for him?

Does God think that if a person ingests a spoonful of strychnine from outside, that will not be "unhealthy" for him?

Does God think that if a person ingests a spoonful of ricin from outside, that will not be "unhealthy" for him?
Of course not!   God is not stupid!   Every single one of those things going "into a person from outside" is VERY unhealthy for them, and God knows that perfectly well.

Jesus obviously wasn't saying that, because that would be completely untrue.

"Pork is very healthy."

Pork can give you worms, and can also contain all kinds of potentially deadly bacteria, including e. coli, salmonella, listeria, etc., and you can get infected with trichinosis, and various other exotic types of infections

But, if you insist on eating it, knock your socks off!   (But just remember what you are eating.)

That’s 100% false.
PETA propaganda.
Why is leftist stuff like this posted on FR?

The Disciples and Paul were all Jews. I am sure they knew not to eat pork because they knew God did not want them to do so. Swine are scavengers.
1 Cor. 6:19,20 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

It would be a supreme sacrilege to bring swine into the temple. And God regards your body as a temple, His Temple if you are one of his people. I know this is foreign to you but you have to look at it in their terms. And even Gods terms.

Are you trying to claim that PETA controls all these organizations?
Mayo Clinic - "Trichinosis"

Cleveland Clinic - "Trichinosis (Trichinellosis)"

Healthline - "4 Hidden Dangers of Pork"

NIH National Library of Medicine - "Outbreaks attributed to pork in the United States, 1998–2015"

CDC - "Trichinellosis (Trichinosis)"
For all honest people reading this post, check for yourself.   Just google - diseases from eating pigs, and see all the non-PETA organizations that point these truths out.

“ It would be a supreme sacrilege to bring swine into the temple. And God regards your body as a temple, His Temple if you are one of his people.”

Incorrect analogy .
As Jesus said food going into your body doesn’t make you unclean .
Pork is a healthy nutritious food source,
Any food can become contaminated if treated poorly.
Lots of e-coli outbreaks from leafy greens

Your interpretation. As I said, Jesus and the Disciples did not eat pork. You do as you will. He gave us free will.

Meat isn't going to directly contribute to a healthy gut biome because it doesn't have fiber for bacteria to ferment to produce short-chain fatty acids.

I am not trying to start an argument. I just am not sure what you mean by “directly contribute”. There are studies that confirm that meat, both red and white can cause both healthy and unhealthy changes to the gut biome. It depends on the individual, the type and the amount of meat consumed, along with other substances eaten.
