Senator John Fetterman explains how GLP-1 drugs changed his life
Fox News via NY Post ^ | 4/12/25 | Melissa Rudy

A U.S. senator said a GLP-1 drug changed his life — and now he’s calling for widespread access to anti-obesity medications.

In a New York Times op-ed on April 8, Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., wrote about his experience with Mounjaro (tirzepatide).

The injectable prescription medicine is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes.

Fetterman was prescribed the medication in July 2024.

“As a stroke survivor, I was interested in studies showing [Mounjaro] could significantly reduce the risk of major cardiac events,” the senator wrote.

“Even though I started taking it for my heart health, I’ve been struck by how much better it has made me feel across the board. It’s made a significant impact on my overall health,” he continued.

“Aches, pains and stiffness have vanished. Physically, I feel a decade younger, as well as clearer-headed and more optimistic than I’d been in years. As far as side effects, I’ve also lost around 20 pounds.”

Beyond lowering blood sugar, GLP-1 medications have also been linked to a range of other benefits, including improved heart health, neurological function and metabolic health, as Fox News Digital has reported.

Eli Lilly, maker of Mounjaro, also offers another version of the drug called Zepbound, which is the same medication approved for weight loss, chronic weight management and sleep apnea.

Festerman could end up in one of them 20-minute-long Big Pharma ads. And if you act now, buy thirty and score a free hoodie.

I remember how mentally gone this dude was and him checking out for months citing severe “depression”. Whatever drug he did to resurrect his brain it damm sure wasnt some anti-obesity drug. Was something more like Ketamine which I know works for depression. You gotta remember Fetterman was not the same guy mentally that he is today. Not by a long shot.

I don’t know what he was like before but he isn’t the far leftist I thought he was. He actually supports Israel? He supports Israel bombing Irans nuke sites? Whaaat? That’s sacrilege in the DemoHamasMarxist party, I’m surprised they haven’t kicked him out yet. The “Nazi squad” AOC, Omar, Tlaib, probably want to kick his ass.

he is more of a classic liberal, not a Leftist like most of his party. that distinction must be made as liberals are close to extinction

My wife is on Mounjaro. She went from watching Good Morning America to Fox & Friends and is a now a rabid Trump supporter. The only negative side effect is that she reads the WSJ. Altogether the drug is working.

Fetterman was a diabetic claiming weight loss as a “side effect” ?? And only 20 lbs ?? There may be a subset of patients with depression related to/mediated by metabolic dysfunction for whom these meds addresses the metabolic dysfunction but the interplay between medication and mental health is way too complex for politicians to start recommending it broadly. There needs to be a comparison to non rapid weight loss patients without drugs or surgery for one.

He seems like more of a traditional union Democrat.
An actual Blue collar guy that grew up in a rust belt town where all the manufacturing jobs got moved overseas.

I grew up south of Buffalo.
Lackawanna was right next door where Bethlehem Steel at one point in the 70s employed 25K people.
Then ten years later almost all those jobs were gone.
Now, I recognized that the Unions had a big part in killing the golden goose.
Two of my neighbors were making $35/hour at the plant back then. Which was huge money.

Fetterman grew up in a town just like Lackawanna outside of Pittsburgh.
So he witnessed first hand a town where it went from prosperity to a slum.

I don’t care how much weight he’s lost at heart he’s still just a liberal snake who should be shunned and you should never turn your back to him.

He is confusing cause and effect. Everybody feels a lot more active, energetic, healthy and younger after shedding 20 pounds of fat.

My first question is how much sock does he and the other congress critters hold in the pharma company that produces it?

Fetterman knows most of America is obese so of course he is going to promote drugs that offer help for most of America.

Typical politician and a sorry slobby SOB. Why not promote physical fitness and eating right? Because he is a POS!!

> He actually supports Israel? <

And he does it boldly. Back in January of 2024 noisy anti-Israel protesters appeared at his home in Braddock, PA. They started chanting, “Fetterman, Fetterman, you can’t hide. You’re supporting genocide.”

Fetterman’s response? He appeared on the roof of his house, and waved the Israeli flag at them. Wow. I could see Trump doing such a thing too. But no other politician.

Hell, those broads would need a step ladder to even reach his ass.

I don’t care for the guy, but I wish him well on his health.

Why not promote physical fitness and eating right?

Knowing the average lazy FR keyboard commando doesn't read articles, you are being spoon-fed like the baby:

While Fetterman shares HHS Sec. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s views of
prioritizing nutrition and healthy living, he said he believes the medications
are necessary for some.

“I fully agree that diet and lifestyle matter — a lot. But diet alone isn’t
enough,” he wrote.

Couldn’t be more wrong. Fetterman is a trust fund kid who grew up in a wealthy Philadelphia suburb. He went to an Ivy League University (U Penn) and never had a job in his life until he got himself elected mayor of Braddock PA, (population 1600, area 395 acres). It’s a part time job that probably pays less than a $1000 a year. It does border the US Steel Edgar Thompson plant, but I seriously doubt any steel workers still live in Braddock. They can all afford much better housing than Braddock has to offer.

I read the entire article and noted he emphasized the drug due to pharma donations and laziness of Americans regarding nutrition and health.

It is those same Americans who gleefully promote P’sOS like Fetterman, the politicians who like their finger and stick it in the wind.

I get everything he’s saying. Happened to me. I’m a diabetic but I refuse to take insulin. All my blood tests showed horrendous numbers for everything. I’ve gone on 6 mo experiments of various diet restrictions and showed moderate improvements on some. Finally gave in to my internist’s pushing a diabetes pill - Rybelsus. Came back in a month a bit panicked that I was losing weight. And got laughed at.

The movement into good numbers in my blood tests was almost miraculous. After almost a year, they’re fabulous and the doctor is thrilled. Aches and pains of decades have stopped and I’ve lost 40 lbs and am now plateaued. No side effects WHATSOEVER. My mental health is good, but then I’ve always been an optimist. Haven’t accomplished anything creatively in the last year, which I’m hesitant to attribute to anything but laziness. No writing, no video production. Just massive files of catalogued and rated Chinese videos. And huge amounts of learning to cook Chinese and Indian food. My spice shelves overflow with things I never heard of a year ago. Had no idea I could feel this good at age 80. Simply stunned by the change in health. And grateful I listened to my doctor.
