You might not think twice about those ice cube trays sitting in your freezer. I didn’t either until I learned what might be hiding in them. Those standard plastic trays that come with most refrigerators or that you pick up at the dollar store for cheap? They could be adding more than just ice to your drinks. Many older plastic ice cube trays contain chemicals that can seep into your ice and then into whatever you’re drinking. Kind of scary when you think about it, right? Let’s look at which ice cube trays you should avoid and what safer options exist.

When I was a kid ice cube trays were stainless steel, then came aluminum, and now plastic.

Haven't had an ice cube tray in years.

I still have a bunch of those aluminum ones. I like them better than the plastic ones.

The only ice cube trays we own are the food grade silicone ones for large cubes to go into a cocktail.

How do we know if the dangerous plastics are not in our ice cube makers ? Even the internal parts are likely plastic.

If the BPA don’t get you then the BPS will.

Written by a female. Females tend towards fear.

As the man said, “Here, fear is what’s for breakfast”.

I’ll pass.

Ice cube tray. I guess if you have a basic refrigerator with no ice maker you need an ice cube tray.

I'm old. I remember these old aluminum trays with the handle on top.Old-Time Aluminum Ice Cube Tray

Remember ‘em? Shoot, I’ve got four of ‘em. They never broke so I never saw a need to replace them.

Okay, that and it’s fun to watch my kids’ friends try to figure out how to use them. ;)

They’re pretty intuitive; but it helps to run the bottom quickly under cold running water before lifting the lever.

It’s a virtual certainty that at least some of them are. We’re doomed.
