Every once in a while, through the winding supply chain systems that end in the items we buy for our homes and closets, a strangely specific motif emerges. There was a stretch a few years ago where I recall nearly every shelf of Home Goods and rack at Urban Outfitters had been slapped with a slew of owls: peering over sides of mugs, hooting out from T-shirts, welcoming you on cutesy doormats. Well, it seems the latest fad in this vein is: the mushroom. Specifically, a spotted, usually red and white variety.

I know. Just shoot me.
“There’s a fine line between a good trip and a bad trip, and biological toxins are a risky way to tread that line.”
Thy require boiling being off a couple times before ingesting.
Texaco.
O remember it well.....
The ancients would feed them to snails and then eat the snails. It made them safe and the snails tasted better than the Mushroom.
Yep... Right on the money. Been used for thousands of years.
Many years ago I went through a phase of ordering escargot in a local restaurant that my then-wife and I favored. I don't imagine that those were dosed with amanita first, though, lol.
They were typically presented with garlic butter and other niceties, so to be honest I'm not sure what an unprepared snail tastes like, much less a dosed one.
The ancients were serious about their hallucinogens; we moderns are pikers by comparison.
What was all over them before?
I like snails. :)
They would cook these after they ate the Amanita of course. The main thing with them is they can upset the stomach pretty bad. But so does a lot of natural Hallucinogenics such as Peyote. And other magic Mushrooms. so the snail transferance or boiling off is easier on the stomach. Boiling off is required with a lot of wild edible plants for the same reason, they are edible but have mild poison that needs to be leached out to make them safe. Here is a strange fact with Amanita. The lethal dose for an adult human is calculated (approximated) to be 15 fly agaric caps. But some cousins and look alikes can indeed kill you with just a few bites.
Who could eat that many and not lose their mind and go crazy first? lol

But what I find fascinating about this Species is all the symbolism centered around them... Other than Opium Poppies it is the most symbolized plant in history. So it must have been a really big deal to the ancients like you say.
Spencer's Gifts still sells black light posters (including ones that feature mushrooms).
Go Liberty Heads!
LOL
Had a five mushroom soup for lunch.
I just like it that you two shroom-heads found each other.
Like me and FHayek.
Spare me the sobriquets, we will never meet.
You win.
Do they grow in cow pies?
Do the stems turn purple when you snap them in two?
Hahahaha so true.
It has been my experience with certain things (Bee Keeping, 3D Printing, Mushrooms, Religion, Politics) that if you want to hear someone talk, ask them about one of those kinds of things they may be a devotee of!
Ah yes! They have a most full and wonderful flavor, don’t they? They are so expensive I only get them for rare occasions...:)
