Trump to shut down all 8,000 EV charging ports at federal govt buildings

The Trump administration is shutting down EV chargers at all federal government buildings and is also expected to sell off the General Services Administration‘s (GSA) newly bought EVs.

GSA, which manages all federal government-owned buildings, also operates the federal buildings’ EV chargers. Federally owned EVs and federal employee-owned personal EVs are charged on those 8,000 charging ports.

The Verge reports it’s been told by a source that plans will be officially announced internally next week, and it’s seen an email that GSA has already sent to regional offices about the plans:

“As GSA has worked to align with the current administration, we have received direction that all GSA-owned charging stations are not mission-critical.”

The GSA is working on the timing of canceling current network contracts that keep the EV chargers operational. Once those contracts are canceled, the stations will be taken out of service and “turned off at the breaker,” the email reads. Other chargers will be turned off starting next week.

“Neither Government Owned Vehicles nor Privately Owned Vehicles will be able to charge at these charging stations once they’re out of service.”

Colorado Public Radio first reported yesterday that it had seen the email that was sent to the Denver Federal Center, which has 22 EV charging stations at 11 locations.

Not sure I even believe this story, but I don’t see the need to turn off existing ports.

There should be a fee though to use them for non-government vehicles, the same as the local going rate of non-government owned stations would charge.

That would make the most sense, but I suspect that the government is so inept (or maybe diabolical) that the electricity to charge cars would be “free” and not charged to the car owner.

Here is a recent article (Oct 2024) about what the DOD has been up to lately with EVs and charging. I suspect this will be canceled.

Reflecting on the situation, “shut them down” has no clear meaning. Media always has an agenda.

Knowing Trump, I would think they would be privatized and least offered that way if the market will take it.

The free stuff will be shut down......................

Wow, I’ve never read an article with such gigantic heaps of government bureaucratese and plain old bull crap in my life. There’s not a buzzword under the sun that isn’t crammed into that article.

Have a service fee. Seems a waste to trash them.

Can someone explain to me why private businesses offer free charging stations?

The building where I used to work had a row of free charging stations across one end of the parking lot.

I know it costs them money to charge stranger’s cars.

Who the heck is paying for the electricity?

At places of work people only use them because they are free. Adding a payment system would be more cost and then the fed workers will go back to charging at home where it is cheaper.

Ooh, a potential cottage industry. Get yerself a gas-fired generator and work in parking lots. Charge a fee and a gallon of gas — the latter just to stick it to ‘em.

Why wouldn’t he turn them into revenue streams? I mean….they are already there. If people want to use them, charge them for the energy.

Tearing them out seems like a waste of money already spent.

This makes no sense. If the infrastructure is built, use it. Meter it if you want, but use it.

If a fleet of EV vehicles has been purchased for a local post office or other facility with a motor pool, use it. Make a cost conscious, market driven choice for what an agency should buy going forward, but sunk costs are sunk costs.

EVs are not the enemy. They are one more option for those who want them. The enemy is top down government mandates in the cause of technology forcing.

In some places (not sure of THESE) employees CAN charge for free. It has to do with how the company pays for their power. The amount of energy siphoned off for charging a few electric cars is insignificant to the energy used and paid for at large operations.

In the end, the company is paying a flat rate for their power…and employees would see it as a benefit.

I would not invest in it on a “metered” system, but in some places its a win for no extra money.

The Feds aren't providing free EV charging for regular employees to charge their private EVs. I am guessing a few people figure out how to skirt the system if they are insiders at a transport depot. The local working stiff that parks in a vast parking lot or on a side street doesn't and wont have access to EV charging stations while at work..
