Elon Musk put a chip in this paralysed man’s brain. Now he can move things with his mind. Should we be amazed - or terrified?
The Guardian ^ | Feb 8 | Jenny Kleeman

... Elon Musk would ultimately turn this quality to his advantage when, after nearly eight years of being quadriplegic, Noland agreed to allow the world’s richest man to implant an electronic chip into his brain. In January 2024, Noland became the first human recipient of a brain-computer interface (BCI) developed by Musk’s company, Neuralink. If it worked, it would allow him to control a computer using only the power of his mind.

Only four months after he first heard about Neuralink, Noland was on an operating table, with a purpose-built robot poised to insert the N1 chip into his motor cortex. The stakes could not have been higher for him: he was risking infection, haemorrhage and brain damage. “My brain is the last part of myself that I really feel I have control over,” he tells me from his wheelchair at his kitchen table in Yuma, Arizona. But the stakes for humankind, too, were very great: if Neuralink succeeds, the world’s most powerful billionaire will have fulfilled his science-fiction-fuelled dreams of melding minds with machines.

What kind of person chooses to be Elon Musk’s guinea pig? And, once the experiment is over, what happens next – for Noland, and for the rest of us?

In fairness this is a good question from the Lefty Guardian and I have my reservations but this is for paralyzed/quadriplegics he's not advocating putting them in all our brains so not really dystopian, Freepers? I trust Elon more than most with this technology.

I think this is AWESOME news! Too bad Christopher Reeves could not have been the first.

This cannot turn out well in the end. They WILL abuse it... We WILL become the Matrix.

There is a line. And they are crossing it...

For Noland there is not much to lose, and a lot to gain.

Now to put this into a pilots’ brain for an interstellar trip, now that is a long way off.

But every sci fi story has a beginning.

And an ending?

I’ll respond not as a “Freeper” but an individual...that groupthink scares me JUST AS MUCH on the right as it does on the left.

I love FR...but we’re not the BORG.

If laws need to be passed..YES, sometimes laws are needed...restricting its use, so be it.

“NO MORE LAWS!!” will be the reaction.

Like speed limits? Slower limits driving down a school block at school time? Not being able to wave a knife around in a movie theater?

OF COURSE there are laws that are needed...if it becomes necessary here..then congress should make it so.

Representing the will of the people...and I’d like some checks put in place for this.

From the article:

While no regulator has yet allowed BCIs to be used outside an experimental setting, enough people have them for an online forum, BCI Pioneers , to exist for the community.

Now The Guardian is a very left wing newspaper, but it is worth checking out this article. Just don't donate!

Noland dreams of being able to connect to a Tesla car and Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot. “It would give me the ability to have a 24-hour caregiver that I can control, to do anything for me, and I would be able to get around.”

Well, a man must dream ...

I’m mostly awed by Musk’s imagination and dedication to pushing frontiers. Most people would be satisfied if they did it once in their lives. He just keeps going and going and going - a real-life Energizer Bunny.

As for the connection, I’m torn. I can see dangers on every side. And yet...

"But every sci fi story has a beginning. And an ending?"

He woke up. The operation was a success and soon he began to interact with his computer. He decided to learn to code. Soon he was competent with basic coding.

Astonishingly, while he slept, the link and the computer kept communicating. In a week, he learned new systems of coding. In two months it could be said that his brain and the computer functioned as a single entity.

A point was reached after a year where he was able to communicate with millions of computers, and suddenly, he was a master of the matrix; he could see code, talk to it, make it do what he asked. He had a plan, and he was going to take over all computers.

The door opened and some armed agents came in. They unplugged his computer. They chloroformed him and took him to surgery. They removed the chip.

The end.

I’m reminded of one of my favorite Star Trek episodes “The Menagerie”

The ending always gets me….

P.S. “The Domesday Machine” is my favorite.😊

As an individual with a paralyzed
bracial plexus for more than 50
years, I find this tremendous news.
All those I’ve known at rehab
centers, who’s conditions were
far worse than mine, maybe a glimmer
of hope. The feeling of being
trapped, unable to move, dependent
on others for one’s existance.
Survival forces one to accept things
many aspects of indignanties.
The simple act of lifting your
child from their crib, to hold them
close. Was lost for me.

Everyone should have a gun, k*ll all Muslims, Homosexuals,Democrats, Liberals, Nuke everyone that doesn't agree with us, The Book and "our" God is the only God etc.

Boorish and predictable views exist on both extremes of the spectrum.

As an American I can choose to live and let live. Defend my Rights and my family as I see fit. Nobody tells me or mine how to live by their rules.

Some here need to go back to 16th Century Europe and control others. Not me. Most of us and our ancestors left that nonsense behind a long time ago. The Rights guaranteed in The Constitution and The Bill of Rights are my Weapon against all that wish to bend others to their will. Period.

Yes, it is. Musk has done it again, something that probably will become a thing we all might do. No keyboards no mouse, what a thought!!

But the venom in this article. Attacking Musk because he is rich? Because he is successful? Ad Hominem attacks are so vile, why do we tolerate them?

I've grown really tired of them. Oh, the lefty media does this regularly.

I guess I don't have to visit the so called Guardian nor their webpage advertisers. Oh, for that matter, the NY SLimes, The Washington Pest, the Atlanta Urinal Constipation.

Oh, did I hear that SeeBS had to give the raw data showing they did clean up Kamala's Word Salad. SeeBS should have settled out of court before setting a precedence the whole leftist media are going to regret.

Deceptive editing and vilification reporting may attract more lawsuits now that the dam has been broken on such. The fig leaf that reporters can lie legally, is getting old and smelly.

Just pass me the popcorn. There is a new sheriff in town.

“If I was quadriplegic and had not walked for years and would never walk again, I might try it.”

Yeah, and the development of vaccines to help humanity turned out well didn’t it?

The problem is man+power+greed. It always starts off positive and always ends up extremely negative.

It will not be left alone to just help people. It WILL end up being used to control and enslave people.

This cause and effect coming from human nature has always been a 100% reality without fail.

So we actually already know how this story will end... And it will not be positive...
