In a previous video I introduced the oldest voices that can still be heard through recordings made on Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville’s phonautograph and Thomas Edison’s early tinfoil phonograph. This time, we look at how efforts to promote Edison’s new “perfected” phonograph in Britain led to the preservation of the voices of many famous Victorians - from poets and composers like Robert Browning and Arthur Sullivan, to major political figures like William Gladstone. We will also see how his rivals finally succeeded in recording the voice of Queen Victoria.

The REAL MEN who dealt with the Cold War sound much more mature than the Girly Men that we’re stuck with when Democrats take power.

Bill and Ted approve.

They actually sound just about how I expected. That hoiy-toity accent. Except that some of them tril their 'R's a little bit more than I expected.

That sounds like someone faking a British accent. 😆 They did roll their Rs more than expected. You very rarely hear that anymore.

That sounds like someone faking a British accent.

I think that is because they are east coast upper-crust types. In the 1800s they were still heavily influenced by their english roots, but if you talked to anyone off the streets, they wouldn’t sound like that at all.

You can also go to Victoria, B.C., and hear how Victorians sound today.

And the upper crust were faking a German accent so as to make their German Monarchs feel more at home, dropping their Rs or trilling them, as required. Spanish courtiers used to affect a lisp to please their monarch. Whatever the upper crust does becomes a fixture in the language.

In the US, it’s ghetto-speak that sets the pace, with new idioms and slang.

Someone was speculating that maybe we could one day hear ancient greeks’ speech by mapping the bumps around greek potery as a record of the vibrations through the pottery honing sticks.
