Could McDonald's Bring Back Beef Tallow?
Newsweak ^ | Feb 02, 2025 | James Bickerton

Earlier this month Stake 'n Shake announced it plans to use "100 percent beef tallow," or animal fat, for cooking its fries rather than vegetable oil. Vegetable oil has been sharply criticized on health grounds including by President Donald Trump's secretary of health nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The move has raised questions over whether other fast-food companies such as McDonald's could adopt similar policies, with one nutrition expert telling Newsweek such a move could "might resonate" with the restaurant chain's history.

Newsweek contacted the McDonald's press office for comment via email.

Why It Matters Kennedy, who Trump wants to head the Department of Health & Human Services, is a fierce critic of certain types of seed oil, also known as vegetable oil, and has claimed Americans are being "unknowingly poisoned" by the product.

A range of companies have made moves to ingratiate themselves with the Trump administration, for example by scrapping or rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. If Congress confirms Kennedy as health secretary restaurant chains could come under direct or indirect pressure to dump vegetable oil in exchange for beef tallow.

lol, another good reason to support RFK Jr's confirmation. The alarmed, panicked tone of Jimbo here is hilarious.

By not being a transgender freak, RFJ Jr is already miles ahead of Biden’s HHS Secretary. If RFK Jr can bring back fries cooked in beef tallow and Coke made with cane sugar, he’ll be the best HHS Secretary to have ever existed.

Oh, I hope so! I’ve been trying to find beef tallow but the prices are just nuts.

That would be amazing!

Coke hasn’t been right since they dropped sugar. I always loved the fries as a child, but I don’t remember what they tasted like.

Rush Limbaugh would get a kick out of this.

Seriously. Beef tallow for our fries, and cane sugar for our Cokes. Make fast food great again!

I hope that happens. Those fries in the ‘60s were the best!

And Rush would think he died and went to Heaven. Which he already did, actually.

Might be a good time to buy stock in cattle and farming.

I’m old enough to remember when McDonald’s switched over to vegatable oil for their fries. Hasn’t been the same since.

RE: Coke.

I remember lawsuits by the bottlers and truckers in places where Coke decided to drop real sugar. Used to be off and on in various regions I was told.

Like the war against EV’s why can’t Americans decide what we want in food and drink? That would make it like....a free country.

Preferred Wendy’s fries over McDonalds ever since.

They had such great food as I recall, up until about 1982, when they started messing with everything.

I picked up pork lard and beef tallow over the past 10 days to cook with and the difference is apparent in the flavor profiles and health benefits of using them while cooking.

My wife is using tallow for her beautiful skin!!

Go to a local butcher and buy 3 or 4 pounds of beef suet. Melt it down on low heat, strain and put in a large can in the fridge. You’ve got tallow. Good beef suet around here is 75 cents a pound If you strain it after using it, it will last for many months in the fridge. Great for fries, searing a steak in a cast iron skillet just takes a spoonful. Sear burgers, deep fry anything. Crispy, not greasy.

You beef tallow fans are amateurs.

Rendered duck fat is the way to go.

If McDonald’s adopts beef tallow the price of soap will go up.

Who?

Is this a professional news magazine or some half-witted blog?
